I called Amex today to explore my options. My platinum charge card is up for renewal in a few months. They've offered me 36k MR points to renew. Going to have a think about it. Haven't spent as much on it as I thought but got a shock when they told me I'd spent $50k on dining.

Wow that means you've earned a cool 150k MR points!

I signed up for the QANTAS Amex Premium (1.25 pts/ $) on a free offer then got them to waive the fee every year for about 6 years <snip>
I am thinking now of just cancelling the card. The reason I'll give is I want to get a sign-up bonus later on (after the 18 month wait). I don't think they will offer anything since I rarely use the card now.

didnt know now there was a reapplication waiting period. How longs that been around ?

For a very long time AMEX have had a rule that sign-on bonuses are not available to those who have held an AMEX card within the last 12 months. For some cards they have moved that out to 18 months now.

I recently cancelled my Qantas Premium card (as I was swapping to a DJ's Platinum for better earn rates at supermarkets).

Amex offered to step me down to the free Qantas Discovery card in return for 2,500 Qantas points. I didn't think it was worth the bother of having the extra card at the time.

Was offered 25k velocity points when I rang to cancel my platinum velocity card. Initially was offered the downgrade to escape card.

No points offered for cancelling my David Jones card today, all they offered was a free downgrade to the scorecard version. Didn't take them up on it.

Cancelled my Qantas Premium card just now. Offered a balance transfer deal, then the downgrade to the fee free card. Dropped plenty of hints that I was only looking for bonus points but nothing doing.

Easy come, easy go...

Called to cancel Amex Business Gold today. Offered (and accepted) 36,000 MR to keep. Not bad for next years $169 fee.

That's a pretty good deal. I was offered 36000 MR to keep $1200 platinum charge.
Are you spending much on it?

Nothing spent on it in the last 9 months. I've been using the Biz accelerator instead.

Have both Plat Edge and Velocity Plat... got 36k MR on the edge card and 36K Velocity points on the other to stay.....ok I will stay for another 12 months

Got offered 20k points when i said I wanted to cancel my Edge (I only pay $149 annual fee too)

Rang up the other day and was offered 20k to keep my Platinum Charge, even though the annual fee is way too high I'll keep the card. I haven't been using it much over the last six months - been giving some other cards a hammering instead!

Velocity Plat, called to cancel and was only offered the Velocity Escape. I hung up the phone. I have put about 30k over the card in the last 12months.

Data point: A friend of mine with the platinum charge called up this morning and got 44k retention points. Sounds like there is room for improvement over the 36k most of us have reported - albeit he spends much more on his than I do on mine.

Amount on the card can mount up surprisingly, but essential to pay no interest. For the first time ever, I rec'd a cc annual statement in July and was incredulous that I'd put through $145,000. I pay quite a few accounts for other people who don't collect points.

In brief rang twice to cancel Velocity Platinum ,cancelled the 2nd time day before I would have been charged annual fee. The 1st time they just offered to Velocity Escape $0 fee or platinum Edge. the 2nd time Velocity Escape and when said no offered that card with 1500 points added.
I've had bank issued Amex for many years and put a lot on it only had proper Amex for year and never put much on it, got it of cause for at the time 110k bonus Velocity points. I had one friend join in the last year with me as referrer so scored some extra points . Two of my other friends recently where considering joining if they did would have kept the card for the extra bonus points from referrer link. I'll look to apply Amex again 12-18months get another bonus run in the mean time try one of the other non Amex cards have bonus joining offers.
