No need to reinvent the wheel. It’s a long thread with lots of good info in it.

In short, you'll likely need an SSN or ITIN to open a US bank account remotely from AU unless you go to the US. HSBC Premier is the easiest way to get a US bank account remotely.

There’s also a lot of information about setting up a US account with Wise which might be easier than HSBC YMMV. I don’t have any experience of this I can share.
