American Airlines’ surprise decision to select the International Aero Engines V2500 to power Airbus A321s ordered recently as part of its extensive fleet transformation program, could give Pratt & Whitney some hope regarding the upcoming Airbus A320NEO engine selection.
American announced in July its decision to order 130 Airbus A320 family aircraft plus options as part of a huge fleet renewal plan that included the A320NEO, additional Boeing 737s and the launch of the 737 MAX family. Now, American has split its A320 family order into A321s and A319s with deliveries beginning in 2013. The A319s will be powered by CFM International CFM56-5Bs—again a first for American. The Airbus twins will replace the remainder of American’s fuel-thirsty MD-80 fleet not already supplanted by its growing fleet of Boeing 737-800s. These, of course, are CFM56-7B powered, adding to the surprise of Monday’s A321 announcement.[/TD]
