PLATINUM EDGE. Now with 15,000 points & $200 Travel Credit

Hi.
It looks like the platinum edge has changed slightly. For some it'll be for the worse, but for others, it'll be better.

Basically, the new referral offer replaces the complimentary flight with a $200 travel credit when applied for using a referral link. The standard AMEX page page still offers 10,000 points and a complimentary flight.
I wonder if the standard offer will soon follow in offering a travel credit in lieu of a free flight? [like the explorer card]. Indeed, I'm curious if AMEX will try to convert existing plat edge holders to the travel credit card once renewal comes up?

So the basic offer looks a like this:

  • Receive 15,000 Membership Rewards Bonus Points[SUP]1[/SUP] when you apply, are approved and spend $750 on your Card within the first 3 months of Card Membership.
  • Enjoy a $200 Travel Credit every year[SUP]2[/SUP]
  • 0% p.a. on balance transfers for the first 12 months[SUP]3[/SUP]
  • Complimentary enrolment in the Membership Rewards Ascent program[SUP]4[/SUP] saving you $80 per year.
  • When you pay for travel on your Card you will receive Complimentary domestic and international Travel Insurance[SUP]5[/SUP].

With the Platinum Edge Credit Card, you receive complimentary enrolment in the Membership Rewards Ascent program[SUP]4[/SUP].

  • Earn 3 Membership Rewards points[SUP]4[/SUP] per dollar spent at major supermarkets.
  • Earn 2 Membership Rewards points[SUP]4[/SUP] per dollar spent at major petrol stations.
  • Earn 1 Membership Rewards point[SUP]4[/SUP] per dollar spent on all other purchases excluding utilities, insurance (except those issued by American Express), telecommunication providers and government bodies in Australia where you earn 0.5 Membership Rewards points[SUP]4[/SUP] per dollar spent.

A $200 travel credit will definitely be easier to use for some as it expands the base that you can effectively recoup the annual fee.

Anyhow, should you find this offer attractive, I would of course be highly appreciative if you used my referral link.

)

Re: PLATINUM EDGE. Now with 15,000 points & $200 Travel Credit

Thanks in advance for using my link :)

Re: PLATINUM EDGE. Now with 15,000 points & $200 Travel Credit

As has been pointed out, AMEX has released their new offer for this much loved card. The signon bonus being offered is still the same, at 15,000 points, the annual fee still stands at $195, and AMEX have replaced the free flight with a $200 travel credit - essentially offsetting the annual fee. The current 15,000 point offer doesn't seem to have an expiry and to take advantage, just apply through this link! REFERRAL LINK.

For anyone that doesn't have, or know about this card, this would have to be the most recommended credit card on AFF!! And for good reason, if you'd like to know more my thoughts on this card follow, there are also plenty of posts and threads on how to make the most of this card. One that has a particularly good following, and is full of useful advice is Gift Cards at Supermarkets, which covers how to make the most of this cards massive 3pts/$ earn at supermarkets by using gift cards for your other shopping. The New statement credits thread also covers the current AMEX Statement Credit offers that are available to AMEX card holders. AMEX statement credit offers, come out frequently and can be a great way to save some extra $$$ (sometimes even serious cash), assuming they line up with your planned spending. I've certainly made some significant savings out of them over the last year, and they seem to have been ramping up over the last few months!

I applied for this card exactly a year ago now, via a referral offer on this forum, and was approved instantly. Instant approvals have been the norm for me when applying through a referral link. Since I've had this card, it has easily become the most used card in my wallet and nets me many more points a month than any other card I've ever had. I think this card has almost cracked the 100k points for me in the 12 months I've had it! It's just a pity I didn't get on the bandwagon sooner! I also feel that with the recent devaluations of many bank issued Visa and Mastercards, now is very much the right time to make the switch to AMEX cards (and not the bank issued ones). I've certainly made the switch to AMEX cards, applying for three AMEX cards in the last 12 months (all instant approvals); this one, the Platinum Charge and the Velocity Platinum.

I guess you've probably figured out by now that I'm a big fan of this card, but I feel that this is the case with good reason! And whilst you may not agree with my assessment, here are the main reasons I believe this is the best card in the Australian credit card market at the moment - and why it should be in your wallet!:

  • A $200 AMEX travel credit each card membership year - nice! Whilst probably not as valueable as the previous flight offer, at $200 it covers the annual fee and essentially makes this great card free! Nice! AMEX travel credits are easy to use, just book your flights, accomodation or hire card using the AMEX website and the travel credit will be applied. Very simple, no hassle and easy for everyone to use.
  • 3 points per $ on grocery spend. This is a great deal! Everyone buys groceries and 3 points per dollar is an excellent earn rate on this spend. If you combine this with judicious gift card purchases from you local supermarket you can really maximise this. There's an excellent thread on that topic here (Gift Cards at Supermarkets). You can make this 4 points per $ if you can become the AMEX local champion at your local grocery store - thread on this here. At 4 pts / $ this card is impossible to beat!!!!
  • 2 points per dollar on fuel - again like groceries, most people buy fuel - why not earn maximum points for this. Make this 3 or 4 points per $ if you buy gift cards from your supermarket which you then use to purchase fuel! Nice little earner too, especially for those that drive a lot!
  • Points can be transferred to massive variety of partners (ie no FF program "lock in" - in case of FF program devaluations!!) - Virgin Velocity, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, Cathy Pacific AsiaMiles, Emirates Skywards, Etihad Guest, and some more valuable ones if you transfer via SPG (AAdvantage, BA Executive Club, Alaska Airlines & United Miles, among others)
  • 15,000 Bonus Membership Rewards Points - if you apply via THIS REFERRAL LINK - based on my numbers I value this at $570+ (and you can always cancel the card if you ends up not being for you!)
I've been a perennial churner of credit cards over the years, mainly because I don't think their are many keepers in the Australian credit card market place. With one major exception, this card, the AMEX Platinum Edge, given the free flight pays for the annual fee each year - and its excellent points earn on everyday spend - this card is going to be in my wallet for sometime to come!

UPDATED REFERRAL LINK: No expiry listed at the moment. You'll receive 15,000 Membership Rewards points if you spend $750 in the first three months - updated referral link HERE!

Quick Card Summary (as per the AMEX site):

  • 15,000 Bonus Membership Rewards points, if you are approved and spend $750 on your new Card within the first 3 months of Card Membership.
  • $200 AMEX travel credit each card membership year
  • Earn 3 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent at major supermarkets
  • Earn 2 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent at major petrol stations
  • Earn 1 Membership Rewards point per dollar spent on all other purchases excluding utilities, insurance (except those issued by American Express), telecommunication providers and government bodies in Australia where you earn 0.5 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent
  • When you pay for travel on your card you will receive complimentary comprehensive domestic and international travel insurance
Membership Rewards Transfer Partners (highlights):

  • Virgin Australia Velocity Points 1:1
  • Singapore Airlines Krisflyer Miles 1:1
  • Cathay Pacific Asia Miles 1:1
  • Malaysia Airlines Enrich Miles 1:1
  • Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) Starpoints (Good for AAdvantage, BA Executive Club, United Airlines transfers) 2:1
As I mentioned at the start of this post, with the RBA's changes in interchange fees, already having an effect on the credit card marketplace, now is probably a really good time to consider getting an AMEX card.

As per all AMEX referral offers, anyone referring a friend (me in this case), earns a little bonus, currently 10k points for this card. The applicant also gets a bonus over the public offer too - an extra 5k points in this case. For anyone who would like to apply for this card, and get the 15,000 bonus points, my Referral Link, it is here. To anyone kind enough to use my link, you certainly have my heart felt thanks!

Finally, as always, whilst this is an excellent deal and an excellent card, you need to take your own financial circumstances into account before applying for any credit card. Whilst the chase for points can be addictive, even exciting, don't put your personal finances at risk in the process - it is simply not worth it!

A reminder that anyone posting a referral link must follow the guidelines specified in the sticky at the start of the referral sub-forum.

Specifically:

Update 31 March 2015: Just to be 100% clear. Both the Referrer and Referee must receive the benefit which needs to be clearly defined, transparent and stated in the post. Links to "affiliate-type" sites where the Referrer receives an incentive/bonus, and there is no clear benefit to the Referee for using that link is not acceptable.

Posts that do not have the required information will be deleted.

Re: PLATINUM EDGE. Now with 15,000 points & $200 Travel Credit

Wanted to throw my referral link in for the Amex Platinum Edge.

By applying using a referral link you will earn 15,000 points instead of the normal 10,000 points and I will receive 10,000.

The Amex Platinum Edge is a great card, $200 travel credit and with 3 points per $ on Supermarket spend and 2 points per $ at Petrol stations. My favourite use for this card is buying discounted Wish e-Gift Cards at Cashrewards/Everydaygiftcards.com.au (usually 5% off, have physical gift cards as well) saving them to the woolworths app and still getting 3 points per $.

http://amex.com.au/refer/jameshLPCm?CPID=999999366

Amex are so far ahead of everyone else at the moment. Great Sign on Bonuses, Great points earn, Statement Credits, Local Champion, Retention offers, Referral bonuses.

The Amex Platinum Edge with its Ascent Membership Rewards points has become even more valuable with the addition of the Amex Explorer card (my referral link for this card is in the appropriate thread). When combined and points pooled to the Ascent program the Explorer card earns 2 airline points per $!

Here is a tip to anyone signing up for this card to derive even more value from the card. If you find this useful I'd very much appreciate you using my referral link.

It is possible to add yourself as a supplementary card holder, I just did this with Amex. When you add yourself as a supplementary card holder it is called an "Account Card" or "A/C" card. I have one of these on my Gold Charge card as well. I did this with my initials rather than full name to tell the cards apart. There are people on AFF who have had all 4 free supplementaries issued in their own name!

Why would you do this?

1. When I called up to add myself as my first of 4 free supplementary card holder I asked if they were still offering the 5,000 bonus points for adding an additional card holder. The lady went off and checked and said yes that wasn't a problem. These points have already been added to my account and I haven't even used the card yet.
2. One of the best things about Amex at the moment is their Statement Credit offers. I have saved a couple of thousand dollars from the cashbacks this year. Shop small, Harvey Norman, HCF, David Jones, Langtons, Westfield and Myer to name a few. Never hurts to have as many Supplementary cards as possible especially in your own name especially when this card comes with 4 free supplementaries.
3. The reason behind an A/C card is you set up all your direct debits on this card and then keep it safe at home somewhere separate from your other card/wallet. Then if you lose your wallet you don't need to change over all of your direct debits.

There are some great tips on this site on how to get the most out of this card, make sure you subscribe to these threads:

Amex Statement Credits have saved me thousands this year.
http://www.australianfrequentflyer.c...62256-291.html (New [Amex] statement credits)

For when your annual fee is approaching call and ask them "What have you done for me lately?" I got 84,000 points to keep my American Express Gold Charge Card. The annual fee is only $130!!
http://www.australianfrequentflyer.c...-71493-11.html (Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.)

Hope everyone is able to get some value from the above. Any queries please let me know. Love this site, love this card!

Re: PLATINUM EDGE. Now with 15,000 points & $200 Travel Credit

It's January 2017 and most would still be buzzing over the brand-new Explorer card by AMEX, BUT let me tell you that this Platinum Edge card is definitely not to be missed especially with it's competitive annual fee + easy requirements for applicants.

With more retails and merchants accepting AMEX, it almost DOESN'T make sense NOT to have an AMEX card which helps accelerate your goals to achieving that awards flights. From everyday use for grocery shopping ($1 = 3 points) to servos ($1 =2 points), it goes without saying that this AMEX Platinum Edge card has been an essential to many globetrotters especially with its' generous earning ratio. Everyday spend also yields 1:1 earning ratio with the exception of bills & utilities + ATO payments. Not forgetting the potential bonus points that one is capable of earning when they enrol in the Local Champions, demonstrating both gratitude and also true benefits of this Platinum Edge Card.

http://amex.com.au/refer/munhoyFRy1

It really almost is the everyday card for any consumers, regardless of their spending power. Successful applicants using my referral link not only receive an additional 5000 bonus points on top of the standard 10000 points, this Platinum Edge card also comes with annual $200 travel credit, thus outweighing the annual fee of $195 easily (+$5 extra!). The travel credit can be used on flights, hotels and tour packages using AMEX's dedicated travel platform to assist you by attentive representatives.

Needless to say, I'd very much be delighted if you truly think that this post helps by applying using the link provided as it not only brings you one step closer to that dream holiday of yours, but it also mine as I will receive a referral bonus of 10,000 points. Afterall, it's all about giving and sharing to all those especially on this forum who's contributed so much.

Please do not hesitate to contact me or any of us should you have questions in relation to the Platinum Edge card. Always happy to help!

Re: PLATINUM EDGE. Now with 15,000 points & $200 Travel Credit

This is a great card for typical household expenses (groceries, fuel) and, as many have taken advantage of, can be owned in conjunction with the Explorer card to have both accounts linked to the MR Ascent program (upgrading the Explorer from MR Gateway).

This offer provides you with 15,000 bonus points when you apply, are approved and spend $750 on your card within the first 3 months (upon using a referral link; mine is below). This is a 5,000 point increase over the standard offer. If you apply using my referral link, I will receive 10,000 points.

Some highlights:
- 3ppd on groceries, 2ppd on fuel
- travel insurance
- purchase protection insurance
- refund protection insurance
- $200 travel credit (covers the $195 annual fee)

Re: PLATINUM EDGE. Now with 15,000 points & $200 Travel Credit

I just converted my Amex membership rewards to SQ on a 1:1 basis - it's a great deal, especially with 3 membership reward points per $ at supermarkets.

Here's my link just in case you don't have this card as yet. Lots of details above. http://amex.com.au/refer/desirwFLuF

You receive 15,000 Membership Rewards points when you are approved for a American Express® Platinum Edge Credit Card and spend $750 in the first 3 months of Card Membership. I will get 10K points too.

Win - win. :D

Re: PLATINUM EDGE. Now with 15,000 points & $200 Travel Credit

EDIT, your link goes to the Explorer card. This thread is about the Amex Edge.

An expiry on the bonus points ... There's nothing mentioned. Amex has always had some sort of bonus going back some time.

ok thats good,

I saw in teh other thread it said explorer expiry bonus was 31st jan

Re: PLATINUM EDGE. Now with 15,000 points & $200 Travel Credit

is there a expiry date on this? cant seem to see it here

15k points is pretty common as a referral signup for the Edge (sometimes it gets better) so at the moment the offer doesn't have an expiry. Of course it is open for AMEX to change at anytime.

Great card the Edge - jump on it if you don't have it already would be my advice - I certainly haven't regretted it!!

Re: PLATINUM EDGE. Now with 15,000 points & $200 Travel Credit

As pointed out by GMOH, the link that you shared is for the Explorer card, another great card worth considering especially when coupled with the Platinum Edge. I suppose the 10,000 BONUS points are entirely different reward from applications done via AMEX website. With a referral link such as the one provided below, you pocket an additional 5000 points so it's definitely a win-win situation for both referrals and referees. With no specific expiry, any successful applications will receive 15,000 points as a form of gratitude and also 10,000 points for myself.

http://amex.com.au/refer/munhoyFRy1

Some would think that the $200 travel credit which supersedes the complimentary return Virgin flight might be a downer but I reckon it's a much better perk, not only because the fact that it compensates for the annual fee but also flights purchased using the credit allows for SC earning, unlike the free reward flights that initially came with it. Alternatively, you can always use it for other tour packages or even accommodations. Talk about total flexibility!

EDIT: A big shoutout to the kind AFF contributor who's selected my referral link for his/her 15,000 points to spend on the next getaway trip! Now it's your turn to post your referral link for it's a gift that keeps on giving! :)
