Hi guys.

I am only new to this community so I hope I am posting in the right spot.

I often fly QANTAS Bris - Melb earning 1,600 points and 30 status credits. The cheapest fare is usually $199 (each way), although they sometimes fall as low as $149.

However, if I drive down the Gateway Motorway for an hour, or catch the train, I can fly Gold Coast to Melbourne, via Sydney, for a cheaper airfare of $179 each way, and earn 3,200 points and 40 status credits.

I just thought I would mention it as an option for flying Bris-Melb.

I am sure there would be other similar options available around Australia.

Garry

Hi Garry, Good tip. A phrase you'll often see/hear on these forums is "why fly direct when you can connect" - you are spot on, it's a very easy way to boost your SC and pts earn.

Not really as there aren't cities with the same BNE/OOL combinations

MEL/AVV and SYD/NTL aren't quite the same. But it's a variation on why fly direct when you can connect theme.

I had no idea. Thanks for posting.

Welcome to AFF Gary BT!

I have flown out of OOL to SYD quite a lot. Airfares used to be much cheaper but have caught up in the past year or so. Occasionally the savings warrant the trip down the coast.

Last May(2016) Qantas had a double status credit offer.

Flying from Brisbane to Melbourne in business class on Qantas was around $960 and you got 60SCs.

By taking a few hours I caught a train to the Gold Coast then Uber then flew OOL-MEL in business for $598 approx for 60SCs and when I flew back I flew MEL-SYD-OOL for $649 and got 80Scs. And since Qantas were offering Double Status Credits I was credited with 280SCs for about $1250.00 which is half way to keeping Gold.

Yeah this is a good tip. I did this over Christmas when the fees were insane. The MEL-SYD-OOL flexi was cheaper than MEL-BNE discount.
You do have to then get to BNE though, I wish they'd extend the train line all the way to OOL...

I discovered the same thing but in reverse last year when I flew up to 'Brisbane' to join my partner in Sanctuary Cove. She'd booked MEL-BNE via her work but since I was flying separately, the MEL-SYD-OOL return journey was a winner - I ended up with exactly 700 SCs that year to get my first entry to SG courtesy of the connection. :D

Hi Garry. Glad to hear that you spotted that. We find it a good little earner most times and always handy to check INT connections too. Also the parking is cheaper

Mrs GPH makes us go the drive often. Not ideal after a long series of flights though. That hour back to BNE is the hardest.
