As a Platinum UA Mileage Plus member and therefore Star Alliance Gold I was 1000 points away from 1K status in 2012. With the new requirement that one must fly 4 sectors with United or Copa, I did not retain my Status. The Mel-LA flight is 1.5 sectors. so I had only 3 sectors on a return flight. One gets 1 sector flying LA to Las Vegas. Seems out of proportion. United dropped me to Member Status, 4 stages down.
After flying RTW on Star Alliance in 2013 I have over 10 sectors on partner airlines and still not enough UA sectors to move up one status. Flying business removes the lounge problem, but one does not always fly business on short legs in Europe, Star Alliance Gold would be handy. I have decided to use up my UA points with the result that I gain no more, and move on from United.
Any suggestions in relation to membership with another Star Alliance member to regain status quickly. I also cannot get an American credit card with an alliance to United. (The latter alleviates the need for 4 sectors requirement.) Very difficult for Australian members.
As an aside and worth commending, Virgin airlines upgraded my membership card on the status of my previous United membership! I believe that they also give status points on points flights, which United certainly do not? I have a 7 sector UA itinerary coming up on points for which I will gain no status.
