All SYD-MEL VA flights Sold Out after 11am 26 March 2026?

I've always wondered about SYD's ability to cope with this kind of weather... LHR has much worse weather and flights arrive and depart reasonably frequently (a little slower, of course). Flights still depart and arrive in HKG, TPE, HND, PDG, etc during typhoons! The flights at these airports only seem to get cancelled when the typhoon is really really bad!

Funnily enough I was thinking the same. Spend over an hour in the hold over SYD last night for "weather related sequencing and approach" and to be honest it was a smooth as. Separation at Heathrow is extended during rubbish weather but certainly unless it's really atrocious, not subject to the delay and cancellations that SYD seem to roll out.

I’m here at T4 Melbourne just now, bit of a disaster. Jetstar just cancelled 4 flights MEL-SYD in one hit on the PA while everyone was lining up at the gates, already delayed.

The issue yesterday was the direction of the wind, meaning runway 25 was in use.

Yep. Single runway opps which reduces capacity and I believe forces the majors to cancel X flights per hour.

I was thinking if you need to go to MEL urgently, you can:
- Book other airlines
- Book any flight out of Sydney, and then change for another flight into Melbourne.

When I was waiting for my flight while they canceled those 4 flights above, out of curiosity I jumped online to see if anything was even available, no flights on any carriers, even the 9pm Avalon to Sydney was not available for the ever adventurous wishing to duck over to jump on that. Essentially was no way to get into Sydney.

I’ve never tried the Jetstar rebooking option. They said over the speaker simply login to your account and there will be a screen which offers you new flights, or a button to request a refund.

Now I assume nobody is entitled to compensation. They clearly said ‘Air Services’ was the reason for the cancellation.

IME When the weather isn't the greatest, SYD is always a dog’s breakfast for some reason.
