MEL has already had at least a couple of 2017 mornings with fog affecting flights, leading to at least three international flights being diverted on one of those - quite early in the year.

For the week beginning on Easter Monday 17 April, Australia's official weather forecasts & weather radar - Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting three days of 'patchy' fog or 'areas' of same for Canberra and Melbourne, and two for Sydney.

There's no guarantee it will be at or near the airports, and in any case it may be 'light', but I thought that with the prediction for one of the Melbourne days not so long ago, and it - to my surprise - was marked by the above diversions and many flights being held in ADL, BNE, HBA, LST, MQL and SYD to name a few, presumably so they would not have to be in a super lengthy holding pattern approaching MEL waiting for the fog to clear.

Many of us know about the 'CBR rule': it's generally fine to depart from CBR on the first flights of the morning at 0600 - 0630 or so, but then the fog can come in and badly delay the next departures (and arrivals) in the 0800 - 1030 or so timeband.

How do others perceive fog elsewhere from CBR in Oz at the major airports - is it just a very occasional minor annoyance, never any problem at all or an occurrence that can play havoc with your business or leisure travel because you frequently travel by air, and don't have the option of high speed trains as in many other nations?

While these will generally be reported in the appropriate individual airline delays/ cancellations thread, it appears on Wednesday 19 April at 0700 that TT426 from PER to MEL and VA1313 from HBA to MEL may have had missed approaches and possibly as a result be diverting to ADL (TT426) due to MEL fog.

There is five consecutive mornings of 'patchy fog' forecast for Melbourne from Friday 12 May 2017.

While the above may not affect air movements at all, Melbourne had an unexpected foggy morning in March 2017 that caught a few travellers by surprise.

Bearing this forecast in mind if booking last minute flights may be a good strategy.

Foggy already passing AVV this evening. Some smoke as well (I assume planned burn offs).

So, Avalon forecast to be foggy, Melbourne not.
