Former Qantas boss Alan Joyce discusses his 'cathartic' new memoir

“I’m finding that it’s good bringing back all the history, and it’s amazing what you remember,” Mr Joyce told The Australian on Wednesday at the launch of an unrelated book – the Sydney Seaplanes.

“I’m talking to people and getting their memories, cross-checking and corroborating. There’s a lot in it, and I think it will be an interesting read.”

He stopped short of suggesting the book would “set the record straight” after his name and reputation were soundly rubbished in the wake of his exit from Qantas. A series of controversies embroiling the airline, from the illegal outsourcing of ground crews to the sale of tickets aboard “ghost” flights, led to the board slashing $9.3m from what would have been a $23m farewell payout.

Release expected in September. I've almost finished re-reading The Chairman's Lounge, so reading the other side will be .... fascinating.

I guess Jayne Hrdlicka is another. Probably pulled up to $100m in her time at Virgin, not to mention millions before that job, and now is going to run Dan Murphys.

Now if I had a few hundred million, you know you only live once, spend that last 30-40 years living life.

It will say “I was great” many times on each page.
That’s what I think is the whole purpose. He is trying to advertise himself to potential boards.

I wonder if he will talk about why he intentionally participated in illegal behaviour. As far as I see he is a corporate criminal.

Ah but in Joe Aston‘s book, he lays out how in the court case, it was shown how extremely carefully it was crafted so that Andrew David was the one to be entirely responsible the worker sacking thing, and specifically not Joyce. The explanation of the workings of the management committee sounds like a game of twister.

Dear (Alan's) Diary,

Today I made a grave mistake: I searched “How rich am I?” on Google.
Now my algorithm thinks I’m either having an existential crisis or shopping for gold-plated teapots.

This morning I found yet another loyalty card in my wallet. I don’t remember signing up for it. I think once you hit a certain income bracket, companies just mail you memberships. I’m fully expecting a “Welcome to the Millionaires Keynote Speaker Circuit’ Bowling League” starter kit any day now.

Then my accountant rang to tell me something “important,” which, naturally, meant another reminder that I’m still wealthy and my wealth continues to grow. Ugh. Can’t a man have a moment of suspense in his life?
