Alan Joyce warn Senators over law change

I'm confused.

Principal centre of operations in Australia? Check - probably won't be moving any time soon at all.

Heavy maintenance in Australia? Well, A380s are not, 747s I thought so (except maybe some done in Asia?). I suppose Xenophon would be advocating the creation of a heavy maintenance base in Australia for ultra long haul aircraft, including the A380. That would be quite something.

Training? Well most of the staff are in Australia. There are bases overseas (in fact, less than before). Is Xenophon suggesting that if we want to have staff overseas, we either have to: (a) fly all staff to Australia for any necessary training, or (b) have no more overseas bases and have only Australian staff (either based in Australia and hotelled as necessary overseas, or with paid accommodation for long term stints)?

Flight operations? As in there are a lot of flights already operated in Australia and several out of Australia......

I suppose Xenophon is basically trying to squash any possibility of there being a Qantasia at all, i.e. that may stop Qantas operations to Asia vs. feeder flights to SIN/KUL/wherever and then Qantasia to Asia and possibly Europe. If that is the intention then I'm not sure it's exactly been thought through by Xenophon.

Overall, I'm a bit confused what the Senator is really trying to do (rationally, not emotionally; and with real targets, not unrealistic ones). Someone help me out here.

As well as the A380s, 747s and 767s are done overseas when it comes to major work, usually in China in the case of the 747s!

Qantas also shut down its RB211 maintenance facility a few years back, so this is now off shored.

So what kind of work is done in Australia, if at all? What's done at Avalon, if it still exists?

I think there's a A330 base in Brisbane, right?

AVV does some work, mainly refits though, and the A330s were done OS but came back to Australia which is why the 767s are now offshored, made sense given the MRTT work in BNE I suspect.

Xenophon and others seem to think that Qantas is a state owned enterprise...

I doubt it will get up. Labor and the opposition aren't showing a lot of support for it.

The joke in this story is Joyce telling us we need to protect qantas' regional network. Here has already given that network to Jetstar, so there is not much left to protect. Jetstar is a qantas competitor as evidenced by the 82% flying not qantas out of Australia including Jetstar passengers. A clear message from Joyce about the relationship between jetstar and qantas.

JQ hasn't really gotten regional routes from QF, they got the leisure routes, which in some ways does make sense if they acted like one company. Of course there are very few "competitors" who happy hand over a market \ customer base it was successful in to a competitor without asking for anything in return.

A question which could be asked, does the QF Sale Act protect JQ in anyway? Could AJ or another CEO do death by 1000 cuts to QF, whilst propping up another airline to get around the QF Sale Act?
Certainly the relationship between QF and JQ is an interesting one. It's a "We're one company, only when it suits", so it wouldn't surprise me if a QF CEO one day hands everything over to JQ and then leaves QF to die a natural death. I could imagine printed on the sides of planes - "Jetstar - An airline built on the grave of Qantas".

That certainly seems like the plan at present!

Xenophon and others seem to think that Qantas is a state owned enterprise...

They certainly seem to think it’s fair to run the profits into the ground in favour of everything-Australia… because that’s working so well with other products

He must think QF is the new "one arm bandit" of the sky - maybe since Wilkie's come along he's lost some airtime and so he needs to jump on another bandwagon to blow his overrated & undersized trumpet:mad:

SA & TAS have a horrible track record of electing & therefore, inflicting these funny little senators on the rest of us:shock:

I am all for ensuring the Domestic staff, pilots, maintenance etc stay in Australia - after all they are protected by the requirement to have an Australian AOC.

But the International ops (and this is both Jetstar and Qantas) compete in a very open market against competitors that are often state funded and much lower cost operating bases. The group needs to be able to do everything it can to compete, or we will end up like the Australian commercial shipping industry - plenty of cargo and ports but nay a ship with an Aussie flag.

Now,now. At least Tasmanian Senator Jocelyn Newman brought little Campbell into this world.

I suspect it's the plan, but the question is will the QF Sale Act actually allow it?
Does JQ or RedQ fall under the same rules as QF?

Exactly. If the competitors were not at such an advantage, Australian airlines (and companies in general) have no choice.

I hope it doesnt get up because Xenophon has no idea and Joyce continues to embarass the senator in these publicly shown enquiries.

I don't think Xenophon has too much of a clue nevertheless he has the right to be concerned about the actions and intentions of the Qantas CEO and board.

Does he? Qantas is not a state body? What right does a state senator have to interfere with said company?
