I still think QF will remain in SYD but also think the MEL visit was not just about JQ, but also possibly getting the sims down there. In SYD they have to be moved because of road works that will take place. Melbourne could be a perfect spot for these, but the cost savings would have to outweigh overnighting pilots in MEL regularly.

Q has been trying to sub lease around 20,000 sqm of this for months wiht no success.

Expect an announcement soon.

Yep it has been subleased from what I've been hearing.

Don’t think they’re just putting the screws on SYD. Moving some heavy maintenance from BNE would be putting screws on BNE too. As well as the VA investment by QIC, noted upthread, there was the oddly fawning public thank you from AJ to AP for opening Qld borders. I thought at the time that was wierd; doesn’t seem quite so wierd in this context.

I didn’t think it was fawning at all, I actually thought it was a bit of a sharp ‘about time’ thank you and he quite sharply pointed out the need for national and adhered to standards on hot spots / border closures so people had confidence to travel again at the same time. Was then echoed by some random Bain /VA2 spokesperson.

But I guess it depends on your experience of thank you’s how type grade it ;) :)

I took it at face value. The sort of magnanimity you’d expect from the CEO of the national carrier and now self styled grand poo bah of the tourism industry.
On behalf of tourism operators across all three states, we thank the Queensland Government and Premier Palaszczuk.
Aye, he did renew his call for a nationally standard framework.

Nice to see QP (police not pub) tear down these walls this morning

There is one slight sticking point for AJ's shameless 'show me the money'. A long term lease on a purpose-renovated HQ at Mascot, 47,000 sqm in fact....

AJ presenting a 'move or resign' ultimatum to long term Q staff would not surprise many at Q - so this is not a 0% event - but let's just how the NSW Govt has more backbone & does not get pulled into subsidising Q with taxpayers' money. After all - imagine the benefit from 4,000 fewer vehicles heading to Sydney Airport in the morning!

Does anyone know what percentage of QF staff (in normal times, pre the virus) used Airport Train to alight in the morning/board in the afternoon at Mascot railway station? Must be quite a few as previously I've observed 'office types' at that station, although it isn't often I've been on a train through there at classic office hours of arrival/departure.

Governments may think in the present low interest rate environment that they can borrow unlimited amounts of $$, but one day there'll be a reckoning.

I predict the HQ jobs will stay in SYD but MEL will get some maintenance jobs. BNE will be the loser.

Even when international flights start again I expect most of them through SYD and a lesser extent MEL, until they have the demand to justify separate flights. Thus, there's probably no need for widebodies in BNE for another 18-24 months.

You tempter!

Now that's another news alert I have to create! Will be very interesting to how the property owner (Cromwell Property Trust) spins the announcement vs AJ. What sounds good for AJ will sound bad for the owners -

...offered at highly competitive rates of around $450 per sqm gross effective rent,” Crombie says

While Qantas will retain the head lease for another 12 years, more than 20,000sqm is up for sublease. The lease listing comes as the airline considers moving its headquarters interstate, having revealed on Tuesday it is reworking its operations, having laid off about 8000 people during the pandemic.

Qantas staff have reportedly been told 5000 staff could be moved its current home near Sydney Airport and another 1000 from Jetstar’s offices in Melbourne, with their consolidated at a new “super campus” at western Sydney’s new airport among the options being considered.
