Is airport shopping cost effective?. I noticed the new TBIT looks like a Westfield redevelopment with new shops. Does anyone shop at duty free Sydney on way out or in?

Depends what I want to buy and what airports I'm flying through.

In some airports it's more expensive to buy something duty free than it is to buy regular retail in Australia. Means doing a bit of homework on Google before I fly, but sometimes I can get a good deal. Other times I don't bother.

I don't bother with duty free these days.

But the issue with any shopping you do - you have to carry everything on board with you. The stupidity of the new TBIT and what the majority sell, I don't think many people will have room in thier carry on bags, so they have to lug more onboard. Things like shoes, handbags, bottles of liquor etc............they all take up valueable overhead space. That is great if you have a very small carry on before you go through security.

The only shopping I do at airports are the essentials - bottle of water, maybe some snacks, a magazine.

Good for getting rid of currency you don't need but rarely a bargain.
