AirNz flight 269 to Shanghai refused permission to land - when halfway there

It seems to have been an issue with that one flight. Other NZ flights on that route (the day before and day after) had no issues.
The flight left on time, so slot issues unlikely.
Previous flights for the aircraft were ORD and KIX. It is currently on the way back from ORD and next planned flight is PER.

Only thing I can think of might be that the Chinese Government had an issue with someone on the passenger manifest.

It would seem that the particular aircraft was not registered with the Chinese authorities. (It appears that it had not been used to China before)

Statements by the Prime Minister of NZ in the media say that all aircraft landing in China have to be individually registered and there was no issue with China, AirNZs fault.

The flight plan was approved but not the plane. Maybe there was a last minute equipment swap or just as stated "a paperwork stuff-up by the airline".
