Did anyone see the James Hogan from EY article in the Weekend Australian basically saying he's watching the August 24 QF announcement with bated breath, so that EY can move in as QF moves out??

The ME airlines (EK, EY and QR) are like a pack of hyenas stalking a lame Qantas

QF really need to rationalise their longhaul network as its obviously NOT working. I know they are somewhat hamstrung, but what can they do to halt the ME airline assault on their home turf?

Yep saw it. Highlights the strategic mistakes qantas has made. Etihad in particular cut their relationship with qantas because they didn't want to expand it; according to newspaper reports at the time.

I'm not sure what qantas can rationalise as they only have 2 main destinations, LHR and FRA, relevant to ME competition. Well I guess Africa, I know someone who regularly flys via the ME to get to Africa. Call me crazy, but they could try to compete.

Of course, the article was a bit of a virgin partnership advertisement.

I was on a VA flight at the weekend and they had a “Development Manager” on board - basically a training guy who occasionally gets rostered on to flights to keep his hand in. Anyway we had a fairly long chat and, among other things, he said that at VA they were eagerly awaiting August 24...

And just wait a few years till China Southern, China Eastern, Air China et all, absolutely cut Ethiad, Emirates and Qatar's lunch, much as they have done the same to Singapore/ Qantas and BA.

China Sourthern have already announced increased services last week, they are not waiting!

Even more pressure on AJ to get it right. I hope for the best but fear for the worst.

I am begining to wonder if the reason I can not make any seating changes on my December QF21 flight to Japan is because it either wont exist or they are downgrading the aircraft from 747 to A330 or heaven forbid, they are moving us to J*.

I can't even move and pay for exit rows.

Of course the void will be filled very very quickly...QF is going to perform a radical surgery on itself and will most likely cease to exist in it's present form on the international arena - not straight away but soon enough unless AJ is removed

And we'd better start learning Mandarin to be able understand all the Chinese movies Air China, China Southern and China Eastern got as their inflight entertainment

I fly regularly to visit family in Russia so it always used to be QF to an Asian hub (Tokyo, BKK or HNK) to transfer to an SU flight to Moscow. You used to do a search on a booking engine like best flights.com.au or similar and the QF+SU combination would be the cheapest option. Guess what? For about 9 months or so it is not any more - it's either China Southern or Air China

Having travelled with China Eastern, China Southern, and Emirates to name but a few.. I think it will take only a few years for the Middle Eastern airlines to feel the presure. it is the low overheads, that chinese airlines have, as their advantage. China Southern is getting there quickly.

at least it will avoid that day long transit in Hong Kong (or was it Bangkok) that I used to hate so much waiting for the SU check-in counter to open so I could get a boarding pass etc.... :p The ex-MOW S7 deals connecting though Asia were very competitive though
