The idea could have some potential if it provided significant saving to the airlines and passenger.

The current proposal does not sound very attractive to the passenger if the airlines are only going to be able to cut 20% off the cost and there is no provision for carry-on luggage.

The more things change the more they stay the same.back in the late 70's we were flying CX in Y-SIN-KUL-HKG.2 or 3 rows behind us there was a curtain.In KL a lot of pax just carrying a small brown paper bag got on and went behind the curtain.Later on being unable to control my curiosity I got up and looked behind the curtain-everyone was seated on wooden benches eating the contents of their brown paper bags.I am no longer sure how many were in each row but it was a lot more than with the conventional seating.

We are all a bit precious in the wide open land that is Australia, with our 21 million people. Just like the outcry when a small number of seats were removed from Melbourne trains to allow more passengers (my opinion: they didn't go far enough).

It's just a paradigm shift - if the safety issues can be resolved regarding strapping passengers. I am sure people who stand for longer than that on daily commute could cope with standing on a 45 minute/hour long flight (SYD-MEL diversions to BNE due to fog not withstanding). I've caught trains in some countries and stood for 3 or 4 hours. And look at some of the packed (long distance) trains in places like India!

"If"... I think that's a very significant 'If'.

There's a fair bit more to it though, load/balancing factors (all to the right!) and accessibility - presumably it will be an entirely separate compartment as combining standing with seating (multi-class) doesn't leave any room.

Sure, it can be done, but I think seats have been in place for a long time for good reason...
