Airline fuel surcharges reach $1000 - News - Travel - theage.com.au

Some airline passengers could soon be paying as much in fuel surcharges as the pay for their base airfare, research by Flight Centre suggests.

Flight Centre said Japan Airlines would soon become the first carrier to charge travellers a $1000 fuel surcharge on its popular Sydney to London route when its latest surcharge increases were applied from July 1.

Thai Airways and Malaysian Airlines will increase their fuel surcharge next week, taking the levy nearer to $1000 for their London routes.

I think JAL are increasing their fuel surcharge to A$253 per sector SYD-NRT/NRT-EUROPE, so its going to be $1012 in fuel fines, so Skroo Turner's not far off because JAL's base fare is quite cheap, but becomes less attractive when it almost doubles in price after "taxes" are added.

These days there's no real point in even looking at the fare, by the time you factor in tax, fuel surcharge, baggage charge, food charge, CC surcharge etc. then it looks nothing like when you started.
The only meaningful number is "Cash Out of Pocket".

Wow! Getting close to the magical $1,000 figure.

We are almost at the stage where the taxes and fuel surcharges on some international sectors are getting close to overtaking the base airfare.

You haven't flown Air Asia then!

Yes I know it is happening a lot with LCCs but now is common with legacy carriers as well on longer sectors.

Trying to plan my next overseas golfing trip and it appears that the taxes and surcharges have overtaken the base airfare. For SIN-SYD return the base airfare is S$598 + ~S$610 in taxes and surcharges. Not very encouraging signs for airfares ex-SIN....

JohnK,
Yes i noticed ex SIN fares have been on the rise, so much so there was only about $200 difference the last time i booked. Oh well i guess thats life...
I noticed some nice golfing courses when i was sitting up the front of CX713 this morning in and out of BKK, i do see why you like the country for the odd round.

I was looking at a very simple RTW award with QF for next April and was shocked at the taxes and surcharges. The routing is SYD-LAX-JFK-(IAD)-(LHR)-(ATH)-LHR-SIN-SYD and the taxes and surcharges for 2 people was calculated at $1832.

Isn't it time that some of these fuel surcharges were rolled back as crude oil is now well below US$90/barrel?

You would think so, but the airlines will probably use the excuse that the AU$ has dropped and since the fuel cost is US$ their cost of fuel hasn't actually dropped. I'm not saying that's true but I'm guessing that's the line the airlines will use.
