There is a lot more to this story. I don't see how any 'configuration' error lets them off the hook.

I think the quote included alludes to this:
"There are no structural defects, but we have a serious quality problem in the final assembly."

I take that to mean that there is an obvious risk here and we weren't properly testing for it.

I suppose that if the ECU commanded idle on 3 or more engines simultaneously then you would have a problem.

I have had a number of FADEC issues resulting in temporary loss of power on FADEC controlled turboprops - so it doesn't surprise me really.
