A Perth man faces a caning in Singapore after being arrested for allegedly being involved in a swearing altercation on a Tiger Airways flight.

...

Mr Griffiths must stay in Singapore until the case is resolved.

Not a country you would want to be facing a criminal charge. Be interesting to see how it plays out.

According to a colleague who did not wish to be named, Mr Griffiths apparently got out of his middle seat to allow a female passenger to go to the bathroom. In doing so, he disturbed a male passenger in an aisle seat who swore at him for disrupting his sleep.

It is alleged Mr Griffiths returned the abuse and crew became involved.

Interesting. Definitely will be interesting to see how this plays out and what is actually said in court.

Too long to sit in an A320 in my opinion, another good reason to avoid single aisle aircraft that have flight times >3-4 hrs and especially night time flights.

An update:

The Australian man arrested by Singaporean authorities for swearing on a flight out of Perth is not facing the cane, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Perth-based maritime worker Bruce Griffiths, 47, is being detained in Singapore after he was arrested on a Tiger Airways flight from Perth on January 4.

Australian consular officials are assisting Mr Griffiths, whose passport was seized and who was reportedly facing charges under Singapore's strict outrage of modesty laws.

One wonders if he had been spanked as a child when he did the wrong thing, if would have learnt self control and not been in this predicament now?

THE Perth-based maritime worker arrested by Singaporean authorities for swearing on a Tiger Airways flight out of Perth has had his passport returned and been told he faces no further action.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed today that Bruce Griffiths, 47, had been allowed to leave the country after initially being accused under the country's outrage of modesty laws.

It had originally been thought he may face the cane as a potential punishment, after becoming involved in a swearing match with another male passenger whose sleep he disturbed while allowing a female passenger out of her seat.

So I guess Tiger has to fly him home but I reckon it would be a dry flight and under very strict supervision.

So was the second man over fifty - why wasn't he charged with anything. No excuse for foul language but didn't the other passenger start the whole fiasco? The way I read the article is the guy potentially charged got up to let the window passenger go to the bathroom - in doing so bumped into an aisle seat passenger who woke up and started abusing him. He was stupid to return the abuse - but it appears strange that the guy who started the disturbance faced no potential consequences.

But that report comes from a Co worker so hardly an independant source. Who knows what transpired onboard.
