"Air New Zealand says it will proceed with its plan to outsource part of its maintenance work, after union members failed to ratify their own counterproposal.

The airline said outsourcing of its wide body aircraft heavy maintenance would deliver the airline $NZ48 million in cost savings over the next five years.

Around 507 Air New Zealand positions will be made redundant on top of the 110 announced in December, when the decision was made to outsource wide body aero engine maintenance."

Must have finally exhausted the supply of exansett spares that were somewhat cheap, considering they owned them!

Sound familiar!!!

Hands up anyone who thought that head honchos of airlines were in constant contact with one another. There must be some major kick-back on offer here.

Qantas could send 2,500 jobs overseas

Almost 2,500 Qantas jobs could be sent overseas in a decision to be made by the airline in the next two weeks, chief executive Geoff Dixon said.

Qantas is considering sending the company's entire heavy maintenance work overseas.

Mr Dixon said there were 6,900 employers in Qantas' engineering division, of which 2,500 are under consideration.

"At the moment we are looking to restructure the total (heavy maintenance) area because we are around about 15 to 20 per cent below world's best practice," he told ABC radio.

Shouldnt be a surprise to anyone, GDs been threatening for years.

If NZ finds it can do engineering much more cheaply in asia then no surprise QF can also.
