Air NZ Fined For Misleading Adverts

National carrier Air New Zealand said on Friday it had agreed to pay a fine of NZD$600,000 (USD$377,500) plus costs of NZD$50,000 to settle a prosecution for misleading advertising.

In November, the airline was found guilty of breaching consumer protection laws under charges laid by the New Zealand Commerce Commission.

Consumers had complained that extra charges were being added to the price of fares advertised between 2001 and 2004, including normal operating costs such as fuel.

It is a shame that there seems to be no law here or there that prohibits the charging of normal operating costs such as fuel as a tax

Doesn't seem to be a huge fine for misleading advertising.

How come everyone but the airlines seem to be able to see that fuel prices are just part of the opertaing expenses of an airline?

I dunno.. $600,000 does seem a pretty high fine for an advert to me.

Can you imagine the reaction if taxis started adding fuel surcharge levies to taxi meter readings. "That'll be $10 plus $5 tolls plus $15 fuel levy plus $15 offline service fee plus 10% CCSF"

Taixis are not allowed to add surcharges to their fees without the permission of their state governing bodies. Perhaps more regulation of airline pricing is required?

Sorry for going off-topic but NM would know a little more on this subject than me but taxis do something similar in Malaysia without the fuel levy. When I went from Shah Alam to the airport the fare was so much + luggage fee + airport toll + booking fee + some other charge I cannot remember. When I got receipt it had 5 types of charges on it.

I suppose the Malaysians are used to it and the government has sanctioned the surcharges. But still....

I would think it is more that the ability of taxi's to do it here has been removed by regulation, rather than the Malaysian government sanctioning it.

As it is we get booking fees, airport tolls, cabcharge rip offs and so on.

I guess you are right. It just looked weird to me seing the fare and then a seperate section on the receipt for 5 types of surcharges before the final taxi fare was displayed.

Yes, Australian taxis just hide all the surcharges from you

The 10% credit card surcharge is the one that bugs me the most. They get away with it because of all of us that have to pay taxi fares with the corporate card to avoid reimbursement hassles.

As I understand it, the taxis don;t even get a cut of this 10% (+ GST) as Cabcharge take it. I think Macquarie Bank are looking at setting up a payment system in competition with Cabcharge that will lokk at giving the taxis a cut of the 10%, but this is just rumour.
