Air NZ carry on - trumpet + bag possible?

Hi all

I've had no luck searching on this one, so I have to ask

My nephew is going on a school trip next month to CHC. Can he take his trumpet as carry on in addition to a smalll backpack? He's in whY & has no status.

Hi Sue,

Many airlines permit a musical instrument within certain restrictions to be carried onboard an aircraft in addition to normal carry-on allowance. I have searched the NZ website but I couldn't find anything which indicated this was permitted.

My suggestion is to either call NZ direct, use the 1800 number which is very fast and efficient. Alternatively, at check-in, ask the agent for her advice. The worst case scenario is either the backpack or trumpet will have to be checked (the trumpet as fragile baggage) and whilst it is within their rights, you would be very hard pressed to be charged excess luggage when NZ allow and extra 10kg for skis/sporting equipment on Trans Tasman flights.

My other thought is that this is a school trip and would the school/tour organiser not have organised this with the airline?

PS. I have flown Air NZ on 12 sectors in the last 12 months with more than 1 piece of carry-on but this doesn't make it right. Methunks there baggage policy is a little lax.

I'm not sure a trumpet is allowed on as carryon in Australia.

As mad as it is, most sporting goods are currently banned. Including "sporting goods that could be used to harm including bats, sticks, poles, rods and spikes". Some musical instruments could pose similar threats to airline security.

Best you chat to AirNZ and ask their opinion. While it may not be easy to threaten someone with a trumpet, they still might view it as a credible (cough) threat.
