The biggest issue of going to landside for transit is with goods and customs.
We always bring fruits, vegetables and meat from Australia to Hong Kong due to unlimited customs requirements, that would make it impossible through landside at NZ.

do you have some kind of refrigerated suitcase for that?

Back in the day we used to bring 2-3 tray of mangoes MEL-HKG during the season, no need for a suitcase either, just stack the cardboard trays and taped up.
