Air Niugini up the creek

Wow... would have been a scary escape for the crew, out the hatch to see that much fire, that close, and then (as someone points out on AVHerald) to swim through a river probably infested with crocodiles... and now a slick of fuel too!

An Air Niugini ATR-42 freighter overran the runway at MAG yesterday after rejecting takeoff due to an engine fire.

Accident: Niugini AT42 at Madang on Oct 19th 2013, overran runway on rejected takeoff

Nice pic of the ATR-42 up the creek without a paddle at the end of MAG's runway. Looks like the crew found the hatch in the roof pretty useful...

Cheers skip.

ATC has a contingency plan for these events. Thankfully it's not deep water but still an unwanted experience. The last one happened in ?2009 where an F28 ended up in the drink. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEvOlOI5Cps&sns=em
There are a few photos floating around of the frame being loaded on to a ship (no pun intended).

So did the locals :)

It was full of British American Tobacco products, that were looted by local settlers, today's paper asked people to stop looting crashed planes - lol

BAT has a factory in Madang so the locals are very used to cigarettes.

These runway overshoots are relatively common in Madang.
They tend to leave the plane there for a long time but usually there is little disruption to flights.
