Air New Zealand will axe its under-performing Hamilton-Brisbane
service from April 25.
.
The move follows its decision last October to suspend flights from Hamilton to both Sydney
and the Gold Coast..
Air New Zealand general manager Tasman Pacific, Glen Sowry, said it’s unlikely any
of the services would be re-introduced in the foreseeable future. The route was "clearly
unsustainable", he added.
"Loadings on our Hamilton-Brisbane service have averaged 58 per cent over the past three
months," Sowry said. "In that time we have flown the equivalent of 32 empty A320 aircraft between Hamilton and Brisbane."
Sowry blamed poor demand and an over-supply of transTasman capacity for the decision.
He said 94 per cent of fares sold on the route were sold as sale or Smart Saver fares
sold on the route were sold as sale or Smart Saver fares, much higher than on other
trans-Tasman services.
The average fare on the route had been 19 per cent lower than on flights between
Auckland and Brisbane, Sowry added
