Had a group booking with Air New Zealand. 3 weeks out from travel one of our group had to drop out. Air NZ would not refund, nor change date of the ticket due to discounted ticket associated with the group booking cost. No dramas, person involved offered the ticket to anyone interested for whatever they would give plus the $100 to change the name. Fortunate person paid $400 for Perth - Auckland return. Here is where 1. Air New Zealand have made a grab for cash, and 2. what would have happened if we had said nothing, and passenger simply didn't appear?

Our booking was Perth - Auckland; Wellington - Auckland; Auckland - Perth. The person who paid the $400 for the ticket was an ex-pat from Auckland, who wouldn't be travelling woth our group to Wellington and therefore wouldn't use the Wellngton - Auckland sector. Informed air New Zealand of this, and they charged another $100 to cancel the ticket.

As mentioned above, thought this was a bit rich of them; and secondly if we said nothing and the passenger simply didn't show at Wellington, would their seat then have been cancelled for the Auckland - Perth sector?

As an aside, had read a lot of mixed reviews re Air New Zealand, and happy to report that they were exceptional - apart from the greedy cash grab.

Sounds like the standard fees listed in the Terms and Conditions of buying such a ticket

Generally if a pax doesn't show for a sector of a multi-sector booking the remaining ones are cancelled. Worth $100 I reckon to make sure they got home.
