Air New Zealand launches seasonal Christchurch to Adelaide services

For an airline who can hardly operate their normal schedule due to aircraft shortages, it seems like an odd time to be launching new routes.
Follow the money? SA is paying? Shift aircraft off somewhere else?

Good business sense.

Short term maybe but despite the news reports not clearly saying who's subsidising this new route my guess is it won't last.

All the meanwhile they'll cut another frequency off a much more important route like SYD-AKL (or claim they don't have enough aircraft for CHC-OOL) basically giving the QF group a free pass encouraging the consumer to make the QF website the first point of call.

Or JQ!

And there’s the issue. For all the AJ haters out there, as a business decision, the split between QF and JQ on the domestic / TT routes really put VA in a squeeze between full service and LCC. Evidence by VA still only doing ZQN.

NZ must similarly feel that squeeze? Gees, do they still have single class planes flying TT…🤷‍♂️

Air NZ are short of aircraft with serviceable engines. Are some aircraft without engines stored.

<snip>“As we move from six AOGs or aircraft on ground to five aircraft on ground to four aircraft on ground, we can start to add services and seats in.”

Foran said the airline had been able to lease a few more Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engines. “It comes at a cost, but we think it’s important that we can start to get a bit more flying into the system,” he said today. “And Pratt & Whitney themselves are returning to us the engines that they are fixing.” He said that was allowing for 36,000 more seats on Auckland-South Island services from later this month. The engine lease durations varied but were for several years, Foran said.

Foran also said two new A321s were arriving imminently from the Airbus plant in Toulouse, France. “They are internationally-configured. We’re going to be adding a lot of seats across the Tasman. They are literally landing as we speak.”

As much as I love visiting NZ especially the south Island there is zero chance of me flying with Air NZ in their rubbish Y only aircraft they fly to ADL. Looks like we will still be doing the SYD transit to grab EK to CHC
