http://www.travelweekly.com.au/dirplus/images/travelweekly/TravelTodayPDF/3_02_2009.pdf Air New Zealand has made further cuts to it's Australian network, further underlining the
over capacity on the Trans-Tasman route.
The carrier said it will axe its Dunedin-Sydney service for six months and will reduce
frequencies between Dunedin and Brisbane during May and June.
The cuts come just days after Air NZ announced it will withdraw its final Hamilton
services from April 25 amid tumbling sales.
Air NZ general manager ,Tasman Pacific, Glen Sowry said the Sydney service was
no longer viable in the soft winter months.,he said talks with Dunedin tourism officials
had left open the possibility of resuming services in the long term.
"We have worked hard to stimulate the market in Dunedin, with some extremely
competitive pricing resulting in average fares out of Dunedin being lower than other main
ports," he said.
The twice-weekly Dunedin-Sydney service will be suspended between April 16 and October 24
while the twice-weekly Dunedin-Brisbane service will scale back to one flight per week during May and June, before returning to two flights in July.
Passenger numbers on the Tasman route dipped 5.6 % in December
Sounds like the Australia-New Zealand Route is taking a battering in the credit crunch?
