I have been asked by a good friend my thoughts on flying Air India in J from MEL- LHR. He's looking at June - July 2025. Priced at $5659 seems pretty good.

Unfortunately I know nothing about them so am putting it out there for comment.

Probably worth searching the interwebs. The vibe from what I’ve read is that while their soft product is ‘getting there’, there are still a lot of *very* clapped out planes flying in dire need of a refurb (particularly their 787s, which fly into Australia, and their own 777s).

Has your friend investigated Oman Air, Vietnam Airlines and Turkish Airlines, all of which cost a little more but are a lot less of a gamble?
