We are planning to visit Canada in September next year and would like to fly SYD-YVR direct if possible, rather than flying via the US. For this trip we will book Y tickets as we don't have enough QF points yet for J flights via LAX or via HKG with CX so we will keep building up points ready to visit Europe the following year.

While I often see discount fares to LAX, JFK etc advertised with QF and VA etc I've never noticed any AC discounted fares although I haven't actually looked for them in the past. I've just looked at the AC website and it shows approx $A2300 for departure 10 September and return 16 October, which are approximate dates we will be looking for.

Has anyone ever noticed AC having sale fares for flights from Australia to Canada? If they don't drop much below that over the next six months or so we will probably have to book SYD-LAX when fares are discounted to levels that are often half that amount and then booking LAX-YVR separately.

I can't answer your question specifically on AC fares/sales, but just another thought would be Air NZ via AKL. I've seen premium economy fares as low as $2500 which would be FAR more comfortable than AC in economy.

It's basically a one airline direct route. QF are selective about when they fly there so you are at their mercy on price.

Your period of travel is outside our school holidays at each end but that's in the shoulder.

I doubt you will get anything cheaper than the price you mention.

Thanks for your replies. I'll look out for Air NZ premium economy fares as well as AC fares and the various options via LAX or SFO over the next few months.
