And if something goes wrong at OOL you certainly will know why the price is cheap-
Family spends seven hours on plane | Sunshine Coast News | Local News in Sunshine Coast | The Sunshine Coast Daily
"The ordeal began when their AirAsia X flight left Kuala Lumpur on December 28 at 7.40pm Queensland time and flew into the Gold Coast at 7.50am in wet weather.
Visibility was so poor the aircraft was forced to divert to Brisbane for the first time in the two years that AirAsia X has been operating into Gold Coast.
Several hours later, after refuelling in Brisbane and being advised by air traffic control weather had cleared, the flight took off for the Gold Coast.
However, on approach, the weather took a turn for the worse, leading to four failed landing attempts.
The flight was diverted back to Brisbane for refuelling again. "

I am surprised they did not just move the arrival/departure to BNE for the day, at least its a short hop from BNE to OOL, the weather in OOL on tuesday was not the best.

Hi there

Should have just left the plane in BNE, chances are that is where most people wanted to be anyway.

Air Asia could have probably hired a train from QR for an express run to the Gold Coast.

PS Why is this an Air Asia problem, alot of airlines divert for weather related reasons.

Because they had no fall back plan.Flying into QLD during summer there is certainly a chance of storms etc closing an airport.

Hi there

Still don't know what you mean, the original alternate was BNE, they went there, then departed BNE for OOL with BNE as an alternate, crew were then probably out of hours.

What is your idea of a fall out plan?

Cheers

Being able to offload passengers at BNE and transport them to OOL if they wanted.
My home port is MCY.Flights often diverted to BNE.Both DJ and JQ then bus passengers BNE-MCY and vice versa. That is a fall back plan.

At first I wondered why PAX did not disembark at BNE but after reading the article it becomes obvious that Air Asia X do in fact need to implement a better process for being diverted to BNE.

After the 1st arrival at BNE they did not give PAX the option of disembarking, upon the SECOND arrival they DID gave the option but advised they had no facility for offloading people's luggage!

You can imagine the atmosphere on the plane....8hr flight from KL, divert to BNE, sit on tarmac, fly back to OOL, divert back to BNE, advise customers they can get off but must leave their bags behind, fly back to OOL.

Very nasty.

As a side note I saw the check-in line for the MEL-KUL Air Asia X flight last week after flying home to MEL on the last SYD-MEL DJ flight...about 11.30pm and I have never seen a line so long - only 2 check-in agents...I was in disbelief! Easily a 1hr+ wait in that line.

Air Asia dont have staff at BNE, and that was probably the issue, staff from OOL could not have been bused up as they would not have the security clearance to work at BNE (their ASICs would not be programmed to work the systems in BNE ).

Doing my occasional trawl through Trip Advisor and came on this thread by someone who was waiting for that diverted air asia x flight.Certainly raises a few more questions. The OP replies at answer 14 confirming the date-

Most recently, my wife and I were stranded in Abu Dhabi when AirAsiaX announced they were canceling service to/from Abu Dhabi in January this year. They didn’t notify us (their stranded passengers) until Feb 10th. Neither did they offer any accommodation nor answer our emails asking for help. We had to get back to Malaysia on our own. They won’t reimburse our additional expenses either.

They said they would refund the Abu Dhabi/Kuala Lumpur portion of our trip, but it will take them 30-50 days to process the refund. Such an attitude!

Watch out for these guys. If you are considering using AirAsiaX, It might be a good idea to develop a plan B... just in case.

I had to cancel an Air Asia flight when they changed the schedule of my KUL - CNX flight so it left before my MEL - KUL flight arrived. I re-booked a KUL - BKK flight with Air Asia but they wouldn't apply the refund to the new flight. I had to pay for the new flight and wait for the refund on the cancelled flight.
This happened in October 2009. I'm still waiting for my refund.

I;'ve been similarly affected by a schedule change in ht epast, but when I contacted the call centre they changed my connecting flight for free.

Re: My post of a few days ago....about being stranded in Abu Dhabi by AirAsiaX.

Also...

My KL/Abu Dhabi trip departed KL on Jan 25. The return from Abu Dhabi was to be on March 1. I strongly suspect AirAsiaX had decided to quit the market prior to my departure. If they knew the return portion of my ticket could never be used, why didn't the check-in agent in KL tell me?

A travel forum (simpliflying.com) posting had this to say,

"Incidentally, I had learnt about the route closure (Abu Dhabi) on Twitter around Jan 25th, and Azran himself (AirAsiaX CEO) made a public announcement in Singapore on Jan 28th. That's why I'm surprised that as a passenger who had booked a ticket wasn't informed earlier."

Farm animals get more respect than AirAsiaX passengers.

Yesterday I returned from 2 weeks in Malaysia and Singapore, my first and definitely my last trip on Air Asia X.

However, I am fully aware that in any purchase, 2 rules apply, caveat emptor and "you get what you pay for". I got this trip for nothing basically - just paid the taxes and charges of $120, so it was to put it bluntly a bloody cheap trip to KL and as I love travelling, hard to pass up. I added on $20 for seat selection and $13 for the comfort kit. Still a cheap holiday. Given that I knew things were going to be pretty crook on board, at checkin, I decided to pay a bit extra for an exit row seat.

The legroom in an exit row is fine, but pointless when you are crammed into a very narrow seat. I guess most airlines running A330's have 6 across seating. Air Asia X has 9 (3-3-3) and very narrow aisles. Ability to evacuate the aircraft in an emergency was one thought that came to mind during the flight. I wonder about how legal this is in the scheme of things. But with budget Asian airlines, maybe safety standards are not quite the same as ours.

Coming home I had a normal seat and I managed with the legroom. The bonus was that I had a whole row to myself, so I could spread out. Also the flight home was a daylight flight, a lot easier to cope with than the night flight out of Melbourne. You cannot sleep sitting in a standard Air Asia X seat. I arrived in KL feeling like I had done 10 rounds with Muhammed Ali!

The checkin process in Melbourne was fine. At KL, it was ok. The staff sat chatting and fartarsing about for awhile, then decided to start processing passengers.

The LCCT in KL is a dirty, noisy, hot, uncomfortable shed basically. 100 metres across the way is the vast, modern, clean, efficient, air conditioned, comfortable and 90% underutilised Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Tony Fernandes won't pay the fees to use aerobridges etc. Malaysian Airports are too stupid to see that they coould get some revenue for the underused asset.

Malaysia wants us to see it as a modern country yet what impressions do you get when you have to disembark from a plane down the stairs in heat or rain, just as we did when I started flying internationally in 1967. Haven't we made any progress in 43 years??

I also had occasion to use the Budget Terminal at Changi on this trip. It is still a shed basically, but there are sheds and there are sheds! Why is that Singapore can make budget travel more comfortable - at least in the terminal building. No bridges of course, all hard stand.

The stated aim is to make money which they do by overcharging for cough food and trolley loads of sxx_ they wheel up and down the aisles. That's fine, I don't buy Qantas's cough either when they roll out the duty free trolleys! There is no free water on the trip and they don't want you bringing your own on board. I didn't see anyone challenged though. Tony charges you 4MR for a 600ml bottle of water. The same bottle of water at Giant or Cold Storage supermarkets in KL costs 69 sen. You can buy 1.5 litre bottles of water at Giant for 89 sen. Now you know why he can give away flights free - and pay millions to join the big boys in the Formula 1 club.

Given that Tony wants to maximise revenue on his flights, I tried to upgrade to an XL seat at KL airport yesterday. They weren't interested in offering me a reasonable price to upgrade. There were about 4 pax in XL, all the other seats flew empty, a golden opportunity to make more profit on the flight. Why does these sorts of businesses, cut off their nose to spite their face. It's illogical.

Several of my Malaysian and Singaporean friends all said that Air Asia X is really designed for Asians, smaller build so not as uncomfortable perhaps as it is for Westerners. They also said that they would never travel on Air Asia for flights of more than 2 hours. That was their limit. An interesting observation.

Finally, I did one internal Air Asia flight from KL to Singapore. A much better experience. Seats more normal and far more comfortable.

OK, that's my little rant about Air Asia X!

You sound surprised!

I shouldn't be surprised. It's not the first time.

"AirAsia Bhd (AIRA.KL) lost 3.01 percent after broker
Maybank downgraded the stock to "sell". [ID:nSGE62E014]"

They say AirAsia capacity has grown at a faster rate than customer demand for seats. Maintaining growth is easier if you make an effort to hang on to the bulk of your existing customers. Constantly chasing after new customers is difficult and expensive.

AirAsiaX hasn't received that message yet. But, they will.

Hi,

QF has 2-4-2 giving 8 across so not much different and it is a LCC.

Ability to evacuate the aircraft in an emergency was one thought that came to mind during the flight. I wonder about how legal this is in the scheme of things. But with budget Asian airlines, maybe safety standards are not quite the same as ours.

I think to fly to Australia they need to abide by the same rules as everyone else.

If people learn that you can get very low prices on checkin no one will pay for the XL seats upfront. QF do the same when the refuse points upgrades and J goes with empty seats.
