Unfortunately I'm one of those affected. Their notification did say one of the options is for them to put passengers on alternative flights (presumably on another airline?) I wonder if anyone else out there has had any similar experience with AAX, would like to know if they do look after their customers. :(

Air Asia Axes European Flights

News from Air Asia's Facebook update;

London - Six weekly services will be suspended with the last flight on 31st March, 2012.
Paris - Four weekly services will be suspended with the last flight on 30th March, 2012.

Mumbai and New Dehli axed/reduced.

Nothing on the website yet.. but can't make bookings past these dates.

Please report back what options they give you. I wonder if they'll offer MH flights? Are you heading to India or CDG/LGW?

It seems strange that they are stopping flying just a few months before the Olympics. Also it is at the start of summer where Malaysian students in the UK (of which there are quite a lot) will head home for the summer break. So there should be a lot of demand. I would have expected they would at least keep going until just after the Olympics. As I suspect it would have been quite profitable.

It seems like more about giving the route back to MAS, than for profitability reasons.

Its more to do with the Carbon Tax I believe.

Well... sucks to be AAX then.

The article in the OP has the right tone - this is pretty cowardice of AAX unless it was true that they have been bleeding on these routes for a long time.

Certainly, one would think that the demand has been high enough to sustain them with not really razor thin profit as such, and there was no other LCC competition on similar routes.

ychan hope you get a resolution rather than a high-and-dry situation.

ychan, AAX took three months to pay a partial refund when they downgraded me from Premium to Economy back in 2010 so I wasn't too happy.

I wonder what they will do with a pair of A340's with their rather "unique" fit-outs?

Booked on KUL-LGW. Have read somewhere that previous passengers in similar situations were put on MH. Sure hope AAX will do the right thing to maintain their reputation. I've flown AAX numerous times and have found them to be pretty good with customer service.

My flights were cancelled too :( I booked PER - LGW, ORL - LCCT and LCCT - PER. From what I understand they will refund the first two, however the KL to Perth flight is still running and they are so far saying they won't refund it. There is little point in my having a flight out of LCCT when they have cancelled the flight that would get me to LCCT in the first place.

I sense an argument coming soon!

So Jewels, you were not offered an option of flying on another carrier at all, as stated in AAX's email that went out yesterday?

Sadly there would be minimal seats available for D7 to rebook on. Generally when these things occur in the airline industry, airlines have mutual FIM agreements for seats at set prices on certain routes. As D7 is a LCC, there would be minimal agreements with other carriers when it comes to disruption handling. Also due to the loads D7 would possibly have at this stage for some of their forward flights would make it very hard to re-accomodate all passengers just on MH, as then MH would be running at a loss.

For example DJ has a cancellation on a OOL-SYD leg, generally they would rebook their passengers on a JQ service (all done at a set price, due to a commercial agreement) and vv.

As for their argument of being a point to point carrier, there are a few other forums where passengers have stated that they will be getting a refund and others stating that they will be getting a credit on their Australia - KUL flights.

I haven't received a thing apart from the stock standard e-mail. From what I have heard on their twitter page they are aiming to rebook or refund passengers at least two months prior to departure so I imagine I have quite a wait ahead considering my booking is June/July. It is just so infuriating because I am flying to London just before the Olympics and my $1000 bargain is turning into a $3000 horror story very fast, and the longer they delay giving me some news the more expensive flights become.

The only shining light is that they have said they rebook on a first booked best dressed basis. I booked the day the flights were released so hopefully I will be rebooked on another airline.

I booked May 2011 for flight in June 2012.... so I better be in pole position? :) They better do right by their Aussie customers, otherwise we'll dessert them in droves!

I'd seriously be looking at other carriers.

Well don't bet on it. When AAX withdrew from the KUL-AUH route last year I was left high and dry. All I received was a refund for the tickets, and had to rebook on other airlines at much higher cost.

Perhaps your best option is to keep your flights to/from KUL and then on-fly to SIN, where you should be able to pick up a R/T ticket to europe on say EK for around AUD1,000 (booked online). That's what I would do anyway.

Update: just checked EK flights SIN-LGW for Jun/Jul and they go for around AUD1,165 (cheaper to places like DUB, AMS, MAD, ROM, where the airport taxes are much less than UK).

Update: Just checked EK, AUD1,027 to DUB.

And if you can't get on EK then often QR have similar fares, out of KL they are likewise $1050 AUD, and it's not like its that far from LCCT to main terminal at KL (about 20 mins drive via taxi or public bus which costs < $1AUD)
