AirAsia X has placed a firm order for 25 more A330-300s. According to Airbus, the contract is the largest A330 order in a single purchase agreement and increases the carrier’s total firm orders for the type to 51. These will be supplemented by another six A330-300s leased from International Lease Finance Corp. (ILFC).

Deliveries will begin in 2015 as the carrier begins a major expansion of its network across the Asia-Pacific region. The new order includes the latest extended range versions of the A330-300, enabling the carrier to offer nonstop service to destinations in Europe or one-stop service to the US.

Thats quite a lot of capacity, Airbus must be very pleased - seems like the A330 is working fine for Air Asia X. I don't think that management of Scoot and Jetstar International will be very pleased with that news....

From someone without too much of a business mind both Tony Fernandes and Azran seem to be quite good at what they do and not scared to cut/change routes if they aren't working

It is interesting that Air Asia is doing so well but the government owned MAS is not...something fishy going on in the background!

Hmmm.... they tried KUL-LGW and KUL-ORY years ago and it didn't work - I wonder what has changed? From my understanding LCC long-haul doesn't really work from a business sense -they're more suited to <5 hour narrow-body routes.

I did the KUL - STN leg in XL. Best LCC premium seat out there, I slept for 9 hrs!

Certainly a lot of widebody capacity in the region.

The interesting thing is going to be when klia2 opens and what charges Tony is going to pay...
Given the renderings if it is too cheap you are going to have every airline wanting to move over, as the facilities appear nearly as good as the main terminal.

That's a lot of metal to deploy given their previous 2 long haul routes were far from a raging success.

Maybe they'll deploy more on mid-haul high pax routes?
