AFR Article - Joe Aston goes BAM!

That's a Good article by Pemberthy. Pity it's paywalled to most.

He's also a local radio breakfast presenter as well as journalist. He is married to former Federal Politician Kate Ellis. At most times their philosophy is poles apart. I usually listen to them. They've read out my emails a few times.

Any idea on how to bypass the paywall, because twelve foot dot eye oh doesn't work ...

Again, not Joe Aston, but one of his colleagues has a look at Qantas' latest "flights-for-we-don't-want-any-favours". ;) Fly 2 journos to Europe - for a day.

In the world of non-transactional favours, no one does it better than Qantas. The company handpicks corporates for its now notorious chairman’s lounge. Taken to its extreme, you end up opening the concealed doors for the prime minister’s son.

This week Qantas will fly two aviation reporters to Europe to attend an International Air Transport Association conference in Geneva. IATA is the peak body for airlines, which asks its members like Qantas (and Virgin) to help transport journalists to conferences around the world.

But the conference in question is an eight-hour “media day”. That is, Qantas is flying two journalists across the world for a conference that starts at 8:45am and ends at 4:45pm. The next day they get back on planes and come home.

From the same people who brought you “meetings that could have been an email”, IATA and Qantas present “conferences that could have been a Zoom call”.

Would love to see the spin on QF defending their green credentials on this !!

The article mentions QF is offsetting their carbon emissions. So nothing to see here…

Really? Scope 1 carbon emissions still at (roughly) 83% of their 2019 figures, with net emissions *targetted* to reduce by only 25% by 2030 and and net zero only by 2050. It also recognised market pressures on the offset price hitting the company's bottom line risking those targets. (2023 Sustainability Report)

As there is nothing like net zero carbon impact wouldn't a zoom call be more carbon friendly?

BD

A Zoom meeting may indeed be more carbon friendly but it sure as heck isn't environmentally friendly. In particular, the traveller's environment of visiting Qantas First class lounges, enjoying lie flat business class and of course all of the other ancillary perks that come with flying long haul internationally.
