Mrs eric2011 and I are traveling next week and due to an operation today she will be in a wheelchair. When checking in the chair I plan to remove the removable foot rests and put them in my carry on bag (not too big, not too heavy). They are metal tubing with a plastic foot rest.

My question is, how will security interpret these items when they go through X-ray. I don't want to put them in the checked luggage as we will need them when we get to the other side and before I can claim my baggage. This is for travel on AirNZ as I needed the full lie flat seat TT

I'm not sure why you need foot rests on the plane !

I don't need them on the plane, If you read the question, I need then when I arrive before my luggage clears. Please read the second paragraph. Any further thoughts ???

Put them in a tote type (drawstring bag) and tie them to the chair, you could even write foot rest on the tote. That way they can't come off in transit.
Now as you will obviously be having a wheel chair assist could you possibly comment on the aisle chair please! Thank you.

When I take my 83 yo mother to the airport, the airport supplies a wheel chair to the plane, and another at the other end when she disembarks.
So unless this practice has now ceased , I still don't see how you need the foot rests with you on the plane.

And it's "Advice" not "Advise"

I don't know why you keep thinking that I need them. I don't need them on the plane, its just that's where I want to carry them. They detach very easily from the chair and I do not want them to come off and go missing during loading and unloading. As I originally said I do not want to put them in checked luggage and so therefore the only other convienient place is in my hand luggage.

Now has anyone got an answer to my original question and doesn't want to debate the reasons why

This is what you said:

you made no mention of security of said items in the hold.
and you quite categorically stated that you did in fact "NEED" them, refer to your original post .
It is (or at least should be) fairly obvious to anyone who has done any international (or domestic for that matter) air travel, that "IF" security have an issue with identifying an object, they open the bag and look at it. as to how a single (security) individual on the day will handle the process is anyone's guess.

You are correct, I said we will need them when we get to the other side. That's pretty simple to understand. You are the one in post #2 that with no real thought process said you aren't sure why I need them on the plane. Well I don't need them on the plane, I never said I did need them on the plane. I did say I wanted to carry them on the plane, not that I needed them.

I'm finished with this thread, thanks for your input and help. Lets just forget I ever asked

Good afternoon,

I expect that security will be completely unsurprised to find a passenger in an airline's wheelchair carrying the footrests of another wheelchair. Or even just in the possession of an ambulatory passenger. They'll x-ray them and inspect if they feel like it, but they are thoroughly used to seeing some strange things, and this is not a strange thing.

(I once carried on board a huge cast iron fajita pan I was unexpectedly given, after I'd checked in at LAX but while I was at Manhattan Beach for dinner. I think I remember a thread here years ago about funny things carried on board).

Good luck with the operation and safe travels.
