We are booked on LA800 tomorrow (Wed 03 Jan) that is scheduled to depart SYD at 11:35. I have done online check-in and received an email from Latam this morning with details of our flight. At 11:39 I received an app notification and an email from TripCase advising that LA800 0n Jan 03 has been cancelled. I have checked Flight Aware and Flight Radar 24 and both show that LA800 SYD-AKL has been cancelled and the SYD airport website departures info shows LA800 at 13:05 (it's actually scheduled to depart at 11:35) and cancelled.

I have also checked the inbound LA801 and Flight Aware and Flight Radar 24 show the AKL-SYD leg tomorrow morning cancelled. Both still show the AKL-SCL leg of our booking as operating and also that LA801 SCL-AKL is scheduled to depart in just over one hour. The SYD airport arrival info shows LA801 11:00 (it is normally scheduled to arrive at 09:30) as cancelled.

The Latam website still shows the flights tomorrow as operating and I phoned them and was told it is operating.

We have a transfer booked to travel from home to the Rydges SYD International hotel where we are booked to stay tonight and have delayed our time leaving home while we try to find out what is happening.

I would have thought that Latam would be the first to advise passengers of cancellations but with all these sources, including SYD airport saying it is cancelled, it appears that this may be the case. It seems to be just the SYD-AKL and AKL-SYD flighst that are showing as cancelled. Do airlines often take longer to notify flight cancellations than flight tracking sites and airports?

Expert flyer shows it as still going. If it had been cancelled I’d expect to see it zero’d out. Seat map also still shows seats assigned

Thanks pjm99au. Hopefully it is still operating. It's just when you see the flight tracking sites as well as SYD airport showing the SYD-AKL legs cancelled you don't hear anything from the airline that you worry.

We had a change of seats when I checked in last night and they seem to have changed from the newer layout to the older with with 2 2 2 in J rather than 1 2 1 so we are no longer sitting together but hopefully that can be sorted out at the airport.

We are staying for 4 nights in Buenos Aires and 4 nights in Ushuaia before an Antarctic cruise and allowed plenty of time when I booked the flights in case of any flight delays to ensure we don't miss the cruise.

flighty just came up with a cancelation but expert flyer still showing seats for sale and can still book seats via the LA app I wonder if something went wrong in the processing of information when they changed aircraft

LA have form for dropping the AKL <-> SYD tag if undersold but I wouldn't have thought this time of year will be undersold (although there is also QF 27 operating non-stop SYD-SCL tomorrow - with LA block seats).

Thanks pjm99au and SYD. We decided to still travel to the Rydges hotel tonight so we‘re already at the airport if they advise we are being booked on another flight to AKL rather than our original flight if it is cancelled.

Incredibly frustrating, I hope its good news for you. I see Latam hasnt improved in the 4yrs since Ive flown with them

I‘ve just checked FlightAware again and LA801 has departed SCL and is scheduled to arrive in AKL at 05:20 tomorrow morning. It‘s also still showing the AKL-SYD leg scheduled to arrive in SYD at 09:30 as cancelled.

Still showing seats for sale on the arriving flight and reasonably full

Please let us know how you go tomorrow as it will be interesting to see what data is acurate

This morning the SYD airport website shows LA800 as operating and I received a Flight Change notification overnight from TripCase showing our flight has been rescheduled from Cancelled to departing SYD at 11:35. FlightAware also shows that the flight is now scheduled for 11:35.

We’ve checked in and have arrived at the QF lounge. When we showed our boarding passes at the lounge the lady at the desk looked at them and said “That flight has been cancelled” and we told her it is operating again so she let us in. We wouldn’t have been issued a boarding pass today if it was still cancelled. The QF staff must have been notified yesterday of the cancellation.

At check in we were able to have our seats changed so we are now sitting together again.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and advice about this flight. It is very much appreciated.

and it looks like your plane arrived in SYD and sitting at Gate 30? So that’s always a good sign!

Not getting it right whether a flight is cancelled or not. Silly silly!

Have never read of LA dropping AKL-SYD-AKL due to sales.
In previous times the aircraft was unreliable. Often left from SCL late - very late. Could look at the AKL arrival time from SCL to determine if AKL-SYD-AKL was going to be cancelled. If late SYD pax would be put on QF, NZ (and EK?) to AKL so LA could depart AKL for SCL about on time. Far better reliability now.

Yes, probably more the tech issues than sales. I do recall waiting to board QF27 precovid and LA had cancelled that days flight (had to rebook peeps onto QF27 and all sorts of options to peeps to AKL etc). The ground staff at the gate said it was happening a lot. Hopefully less so now as you say.

Fortunately, I’m on QF over and back in a few weeks time. Hmm, must check how the visa is going….

EK does not fly SYD - AKL direct anymore.
In past, yes.

I deleted my that twaddly waffly, seeing he and his partner got onto the flight.

But if you want to spend some time on Youtube, go and check out Ryan's Sofly's part of it.
Scary.
