Hello.

I’m after some advice, please.

I have the opportunity to stay overnight in Bangkok on my flight home back to Australia in late September.

Firstly, is an overnight stay worth the effort in terms of getting to a hotel etc? My other options are to fly straight home or stay a 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] night.

Secondly, my primary aim is to find a hotel with pool and just laze around and go out for a quick look. Can anyone recommend a hotel? I am not wedded to any hotel program. Any other tips/hints are appreciated.

If it makes any difference in the advice you offer, I am female and will be travelling solo.

Thanks,
pw

Price point would help.

If at the 5* level.
Huge choice of high quality 5* hotels in Bangkok at cheap prices (typically A$100-150 a night), most with good pools.

Bangkok airport is a long way out and traffic can be atrocious.
Many on this board will use the airport train/bts combination and look for a hotel that is easy to access from the BTS.
Good options are the SGS (Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit) and the Westin Sukhumvit which are both opposite each other at Asok.

Its a great city - good shopping, good sites, cheap food, just horrible traffic.
Stay a few days

It really does depend on the price you wish to pay-looking at the SGS in late september and using the z3r promo you can get a Grande deluxe room for $175 a night. That is pricy for BKK but it includes full buffet breakfast, complimentary 2 hour happy hour in any of the 3 bars, complimentary internet, butler service, daily fresh fruit and 2 pieces of laundry per day-ie all the bennies I get as an SPG plat without the better chance of upgrade only. But that means a 3 night stay.
Great Pool.Skytrain at the door.New Megamall over the road.We love it.

Really depends on your schedule, budget etc. I think the skytrain has changed a lot of thinking re hotels near the airport. In 2008 (pre-skytrain) we had an overnight stopover in Bangkok. New airport was not that long opened & we didn't want to spend what the Novotel wanted. We stayed at Siam Piman-about 20 min taxi from airport-I see on Wotif you can stay for $40 & this includes a 2 way transfer (it was way better than this price makes you think but nothing to see around it)

Budget for hotel is $300-$350 per night at most.

Thanks for the hotel suggestions. I will check them out.

I'll do some more research and if it appeals, may extend my stay to a second night.

(Apologies for initially putting this question in the wrong forum.)

did a 9 hr stopover just recently no hotel but if i can offer some advice on immigration.

1. If you have lounge access from the day prior take your previous flights boarding pass and lounge invite with you when you leave the airport. This will save you a 40 minute wait when departing as you will get priority departure gate through immigration
2. Make sure you have 700 baht for your re-entry

In 06 we stayed at the china princess in china town, with great revolving restaurant and the night markets are a sight to behold

That's a HUGE room budget for Bangkok ;) The usual 5* hotels (eg. Hilton, Sheraton, Sofitel, IC, et al) there will cost no more than $200 per night .

There has been mentions about the Sheraton Grande; it does have a very tranquil and relaxing pool area but I dislike the outdated room style (I have had multiple stays there but no longer visit them). The pool area is actually on the rooftop of their car park (but you wouldn't even know it). My current hotel preference is the Four Points By Sheraton Sukhumvit (which is a few minutes walk away from the Sheraton). Rooms can be had their for just a bit over $100 per night and I really enjoy their modern decor, they do have an infinity pool. I really like the Sukhumvit's location and the new Terminal 21 shopping complex across the road from the Sheraton (or 5 minutes from the Four Points). Also skytrain access is super convenient to get to other parts of Bangkok. And my favourite spa is also nearby, The Urban Retreat.

I will be in Bangkok between 26-30 September so if you're there around that time I am more than happy to have a drink with you ... of course, it has to be at one of the rooftop bars though :)

Thanks for the hotel suggestions, everyone.

I'm getting that impression - lol. Not such a great budget for HKG, which is where I was planning to stop over. But all the cheap bus class fares are gone for the week I need so I was left with Bangkok.

I'd also suggest the Hilton - great pool deck overlooking the city skyline, but breakfast on the Chao Praya beats everything hands down.

Skytrain can be tricky - it stops at Makassan and then you need to change to the BTS which can be hell in peak hour, not to mention lugging bags around. I organised for the hotel to collect me when I stayed - it was nice to just sit back and relax without needing to worry about anything and it was a reasonable price as well.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Some days I think paying more than ฿1,200/night, including swimming pool and buffet breakfast for 2 people, and I am being ripped off.

I am there around the same time as well but not sure if I will be staying in Bangkok on those days.

I stayed at the lebua in october for four nights (the hotel is where they filmed the Hangover II) had a fantastic room and only cost $115 a night.

Will be there the nights of 28th & 29th if all goes to plan.

For the past 7 years we've been staying at The Peninsula:D Great pool & spa Bangkok Hotel | Official Site The Peninsula Bangkok | Luxury Hotel

Wow! That pool looks amazing. I don't blame you for being a repeat visitor.

Another one for the Hilton. Book an Exec floor room and request views to the north. Great views, a little bit out of things (but not far via boat/BTS or boat/taxi). Stayed one night and the Le Meridien and one night at the Hilton recently with some first time visitors and they loved the Hilton.

If you want to be in the thick of things, I'd also consider the Four Points Sheraton as mentioned above. In Bangkok though you can't really go wrong in any of the five star hotels, especially that they are really quite good value.

Thanks for the advice, everyone.

Even though there were more votes for the Hilton, I've booked at the Peninsula. The pool area is just what I was looking for.

The only thing stopping me from saying I can't wait is that I know this stop is the end of my trip before heading home...and back to work.

I've just returned from my trip and wanted to say the Peninsula hotel was exactly what I had in mind and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay there. The pool area was rarely crowded and I always found a nice spot to sit. The spa was amazing...amazing!

The only improvement I could think to suggest is to offer poolside foot massages. That would have combined two of my fave experiences. :)

I could see the Hilton (and the pool) from my room and it also looks good, so perhaps I could try that next time.

Thanks, PW.
