I am enquiring about hotels in Singapore for March next year for my daughter. She wants a hotel which is adjacent to an MRT and in the range A$100 – A$150, preferable at the lower end of the range.

She has looked at the V Hotel Lavender, but has been warned it is in an area which may be unsuitable for a single woman. Swissotel the Stamford is out of her price range. As is the Intercontinental.

Any ideas?

I stayed at the V Hotel Lavender once. Once! I won't stay there again. I am not sure how they got their 4 star rating.
I used to stay at the Hotel Queens, but they are now a bit expensive since their renovations. It was super close to the MRT so it may be worth checking their advance booking rates/lastminute etc though.

It's not quite adjacent to Bugis MRT (probably a 600m/10 minute walk at most), but friends have stayed at Ibis Bencoolen Street and been happy with it. It is showing at AUD163 for a couple of random nights in March. So just beyond your criteria on both counts by not by much.

Edit: It's about the same distance from an MRT as Ibis is, but if you can get Novotel Clarke Quay at that price (in markis10's post) I suspect that would be far preferable over Ibis (noting that I have stayed at neither)

Good call, I note its sister hotel the Ibis Novena is sub $100 and is minutes from the MTR using private sale rates.

In a different bracket, helping plan a holiday for my parents using JASAs that will see them in SIN in January. Fullerton Bay or St Regis? One of them has SPG Gold.

Mind if I ask why it needs to be close/adjacent to the MRT? Buses are not as quick and frequent, but can be quite convenient as well. e.g. Ibis Bencoolen is roughly a 10-min walk to Bugis MRT, but has a bus stop outside its front door. And if you are talking about very short trips of 1 - 2 stops, quite a few MRT stations take up to 5 mins just to get from the entrance to the platform, and likewise when you get out. For such distances, you would definitely prefer the bus, with the possible exception of peak hour traffic.

My daughter has visited Singapore many times and has a preference for something close to or on top of an MRT station. She knows the train system well but has never tried the bus service. We choose a similar location each time we go to Hong Kong and London. It is not the distance from the MRT to the hotel which concerns me; it is the security aspect later at night, as she is travelling alone. I do know how safe one feels in Singapore.

Thank you to all the posters for your replies. I will investigate the other suggestions for my daughter. She is busy with 2 part-time jobs and finishing off at Uni. Whilst I am recently redundant. (Good news, I think!)

Markis, what is the private sale rate you mentioned?

Try the link in my post, ie Special offer hotel offer: hotel Bali, Bangkok, Bengaluru, it's private in that its restricted to le Club members, which number many millions in the world and is free to join anyway ;).

The fullerton bay doesn't have a club and I've never stayed there, but the Fullerton is a very nice hotel and the club lounge is excellent. I have no idea whether the Bay is nicer but it is a bit more 'trendy' I feel. The parents may quite like the Fullerton itself if they are a bit older as it has a lot of history and elegance.

check out hotwire.

they have a couple of 4* secret hotels for , 150 a night

Am tempted to book 1 of them for a trip in may - i think the Central area hotel is the Holiday inn Atrium

I can certainly recommend the Novotel Clark Quay as a good budget option. Fairly near MRT. Not sure if they've completed all their refurbishments but definitely try to get a refurb'd room. Very central location, convenient to lots of restaurants and nightlife in the Clark Quay area.

Another one that springs to mind is 1929 in Chinatown. Not sure if it's near an MRT (far prefer taxis myself as I hate public transport anywhere in the world), but it's a great value and funky boutique hotel.

As for Fullerton Bay vs St Regis, no idea about Fullerton Bay but definitely NOT St Regis - the latter is possibly the ugliest hotel I've ever stayed at... And not just because I don't like the over the top 'old world' style which others find charming or endearing, the St Regis in Singapore is simply hideous and tacky. I do love the Orchard Rd location however - super convenient for shopping. Of the big chain hotels I like Four Seasons or the InterContinental. My parents swear by the Conrad which is near Fullerton Bay and a similar genre of hotel. Fab trendy boutique hotel options - New Majestic and Wanderlust.

Our next stay in SIN will definitely be at the shiny new W though I acknowledge the Sentosa Island locale is less than convenient.

Out of her price range but others may be interested - the Marina Bay Sands is worth checking out for at least a night. The infinity pool in the skypark is amazing but you can only use it as a hotel guest.

www.airbnb.com is another alternative

have had a few very good deals via the web site - scored a $40 a night studio in coughet for next year, and a couple of years back got a 1 bedroom apartment in West Hollywood for $80

I pricelined and got the hilton orchard road for AUD100 a night. Great modern room and it was really an excellent stay. Check biddingfortravel.com and see if the hilton is still the preferred hotel for that area and guidelines on recent successful bids.

I think you can pay to go up there if you're not a guest, but yes, highly recommended experience.

At MBS, You can pay to go up there and walk around, but not use the pool. Only hotel guest can swim in it - and everybody has that same thing in mind. The last time I saw, it was extremely crowded, with tourists looking at packs of sardines trying to move around a pool. There are other ways to get up to the roof for free anyhow.
