advice needed....daughter to get from chicago to lax

I was going to say she must be travelling home from Uni - same as my daughter, but at 16 don't think your daughter is at Uni yet :)
I booked all my daughters flights from Oz, but she is out of ORD on the 20th December

I had my daughter flying home from LAX via PVG (Shanghai) at 16 on her own. If she has her head screwed on, she will be fine.

Thank you to everyone's advice on this thread.
I have booked her on the flight that gets her into LAX at 605 pm, ready for QF 12 into Sydney.

She has been away for 5 months on student exchange.

It does give her a long stay in LAX if flights arrive on time, but better to be there early, for all the reasons stated.

So, thanks again, I really appreciated everyone's input.

TQ

Perhaps a friendly AFFer flying on QF12 could guest your daughter into the lounge. Keep an eye out for posts that might help.

If she's been in the US for 5 months does she have a wi-fi plan at all as it's not free at LAX - unless she sits rigjt outside the lounge. :-)

If she's got 4 hours to kill at LAX access to the net will keep you sane.

Hi again......so, now my daughter is due to fly home in one week.

i have called qantas and asked them to note that she will be coming in from Chicago to lax on AA flight, and have also contacted AA that she has a qantas connection in lax.

neither airline really wanted to know about it, or offer any solution if she is delayed, as they said she is booked on two separate tickets, and therefore not each other's responsibility ......is that correct? I'm just wanting to know in the event of any delays.

also, I assumed that when she checks her luggage in at Chicago, she won't see it again till Sydney......however, again, both airlines said ( because she is on a separate ticket ) that she
1. Will have to pay for her luggage on the domestic leg ( she is silver qantas ) and
2. Will have to pick up her bags in lax, and then recheck them again in lax.
I'm sure I have sent bags all the way thru before, and that was with a united domestic to a qantas international.

im thinking that neither parties knew what they were talking about.......any opinions here?

again, thanks for all your help

TQ

I know AA have missed connection protection should your daughter be flying the other way, not sure about AA to QF.

As a QF silver, wouldn't she be entitled to 2 free pieces as part of her status perks?

i thought she was entitled to at least one free bag.....but the phone agent said no?

How long is the connection? [as post 13?]
Are both tickets cash or/and award ?
Does she have travel insurance ?
Does she have a phone to ring you if it all goes **** ?

Hi Mwenenzi,

connection in lax is 4 hours
all cash tickets
yes she has travel insurance
yes, she has a phone

thanks for your concern

what I find interesting is that AA agent via phone said she would need to collect her bags again in lax, from Chicago, and I just don't think that is correct

TQ

When she checks in at ORD, make sure she has printed copies of all e-tickets and presents them, asking for the luggage to be checked through.

More importantly as Qantas silver she is oneworld ruby & entitled to free checked luggage on american airlines.

Thanks serfty,

After all the information that I have learned from AFF, that is what I thought was correct also.

i will make sure she that she is well armed with all relevant information on checkin at Chicago.

i must say....I'm getting very excited as I haven't seen her for 5 months...

TQ

Just wanted to update everyone who helped with information.

My daughter arrived home last Monday, and no problems along the way.

Her bags were checked from Chicago thru to Sydney and all boarding passes issued by AA.

The 4 hour transit time in lax, was ok for her, and time passed quickly as she also found some other exchange students returning home.

She he was seated in 36K, in the mini economy section upstairs, and jet lag was minimal as she managed quite a few hours sleep on the flight.

So thanks again, it certainly is lovely to have her home.

Now.....to start planning my next flights.....

TQ
