ADL terminal access

Wonder if anyone can enlighten me as to the reason the L1 'departures' roadway at ADL isn't in use? I did a bit of googling and found the Master Plan but of course I'm too lazy to wade through that; no 'news' that was relevant.

I trust its temporary only, (walking across the plaza in blazing Adelaide heat or occasional rain doesn't seem like a great idea) but the 'set down' area and signage looks rather permanent.

It was changed due to "terrorism concerns", allowing more car park space to be turned into retail

Take the elevator up to the departure level and you can use the under-cover walkway.

Agree though, seems stupid.

As it is a new airport it was built in compliance with the terrorism requirements so that cars do not come near the airport terminal. I like it - makes a change from the chaos you normally get close to the doors.

And most people use the walkover if weather is a concern. No worries about being knocked over by cars, taxis or buses.

They did until the 2010 masterplan proposed the carpark and relocation of the pick-up/set-down road that was kerbside.

I presume to stop a car loaded with explosives from getting near the terminal. So instead a car loaded with explosives parks in the car park near the footbridge. Same end result.

What I do not like is that the new ADL setup provides weather cover to the drop-off zone, the carpark and the taxi rank,

but not to the Bus stops - which require a dash to the tiny bus shelter.

It is indeed a new (2008) terminal, and one with a conventional L1 roadway across the front for drop-offs at departure level.

As alluded to by markis10, the COB# in me thinks that they realised that they could do with some more room on L1.

"OK, we can either simply convert the L1 roadway to retail, and the punters will just have to hoof it an extra 50-100m or so, OR spend megabucks by building out a new level 1 extension ... somewhere."

"But won't it seem a bit funny, when we only built the L1 roadway 6 years ago?"

"Yeah, but we'll call on the usual reason when we stuff everyone around in the pursuit of margin and in this case it has the happy ring of truthfulness."
