Hi All,

Has anyoen had experience with the 4kg carryon limit on the ADL-OLP-ADL flights? Can you door check a larger bag like on the Tasmanian routes, and Dash 8 Routes?

After joinging the carryon only ranks, I am starting to come out in hives thinking about having to wait for my bag. OLP wont be a problem, but transfering from my QF to DJ flight in ADL will be a a pain.

I have done a few of the Qlink flights and they generally only let laptop bags through...

All other bags a put under the aircraft.

IME they will take the bag off you and give it back when you get on the land at the other end.

Remembering back on one of Medhead's previous posts he has done many miles to and from ADL to OLP...

I've done it a few times. ;) I'm just trying to remember about carry on. I think I've seen premium bag check, of sorts. The trick will be getting past the check in staff at OLP and then FA should put your bag away if it is too big. I'd suggest getting the smallest possible carry on bag, that looks small. Soft sided bag, not a wheelie. I've taken a RedOxx Airboss and small laptop bag as carry on from OLP for an overnight trip. Probably about 6kg together. Provide the check in staff don't weight your bags it should be find. They can and do ask to weight carry on bags.

Also try to pick a not so full flight. Peopledly to OLP on Monday morning and home Friday afternoon/Saturday morning. If you can go in the opposite direction, then it won't be as full. This probably isn't that helpful, more rumblings really. But you should have a good chance provided you bags look small.

The other thing is that they put you outside when you get back to ADL. You walk out via a side gate in the fence into the qantas valet parking area. This can be a bit quicker to get to baggage claim. It also means you don't have to be security screened to enter the terminal only to then walk outside again.

I have been doing the ADL-OLP-ADL trip a bit recently and have got away with no checked baggage. Depending what you are doing in OD you can get by with very little clothing, so just a soft bag (no chance with wheelies) and laptop will get by on board, otherwise you will have to check it. Agree with medhead regarding the lighter load flights, I got away with checking in a bag full of concrete one flight, well over the 16kg stated maximum, but it wasn't a full flight.

It's worth noting that the Fokker 50 overhead lockers won't fit most roll-aboards. If I jam my laptop bag in there, there's not much space between it and the top of the bin.

Also, the lockers where the wing spar is (can't remember row numbers, but roughly half way down) are very small and wouldn't even fit my laptop bag. Better to sit at the front or the very back.

Enjoy your trip!

The wing spar is about row 3 or 4 back about row 7. I'd also recommend avoiding row 2 as the propeller is just out the window, and it kinda freaks me out. Row 1 has heaps of leg room but no window, it is also hard to get if you're not platinum.

But if you have a tight connection in ADL it is worth trying to get into row 2.

I saw two pax who had their rollaboard taken off them as they boarded the plane. They were given green tags, and told their baggage would be available with the rest of the checked in baggage.

I hadn't risked it and checked in my rollaboard, which is quite small compared to some I see being carted around as carryon.

Row 2 is favourite row on pretty much all planes. I don't like bulkhead as there is no where to keep baggage or personal items, I find the legroom less as row 2 allows me to stretch out under Row 1, but the bulkhead restricts leg space, seats are narrower as they have the trays in the arm rests, and the arm rest can't be moved.

The sight of the prop is fine for me, its the noise that gets me, but I just put my finger over my ear for take off.

You've been on an F50? Row 1 has vast leg room at least equal to row 2. It is not ideal to put bags under the seat, IMO. It is a bit easier to get into the overheads than on a 737 as well for example. but just my view.

Yes the legroom in on the F50 for row 1 is better than other plan, but the trays are still in the armrests. So yes YMMV

Wing is through rows 5,6,7 with the reduced locker. My mate yesterday was on the flight that got all the way to OLP banked in to land, then started flying back to Adelaide. Supposedly the pilot just came over the intercom and said "Flight time to Adelaide will be 1hr 15 minutes" just like they had taken off from OLP! Ended up taking him from 8am in Melbourne to 8pm in Olympic Dam of travel time, he then left the next day on the 2pm flight!

I don't mind the F50's though, narrow seats but heaps of leg room.

Travel to OLP

I've discussed this a little with medhead, but wanted to post a thread anyway to see if anyone else has anything to add. A previous thread on a similar topic is closed.
** Admin: Thread now open **

A while ago I purchased some tickets to OLP to cross it off my list (see my AFF Flight Tracker to see how I'm working my way round every port). I'm flying back out on the plane I fly in on, quick turnaround, no time to do anything, but didn't think there was anything to do anyway. I've since been informed there might be, but that's not what this thread is about.

What I didn't realise (although I've probably read it many times over) is that I'd have a lower carryon allowance (4KG), and this has started to worry me a little as I was planning to carry a backpack (most likely within the allowable weight), but also a camera bag with some expensive glass. I'd check the bag in if I had to, but then I fear I'd miss the cut off to recheck it back in on the flight back (remember - same plane back).

So, do you think I'm likely to have a problem with two (small) bags, especially considering I'm not going to be using the 16KG checked allowance?

The flight is on a Saturday, so it shouldn't be as busy as say, a Monday or Friday service, which should work in my favour I'd have thought, but really depends on how flexible they can be with me.

Anyone have experience with this service?

Thanks.

Re: Travel to OLP

I have flown a ADL-OLP turn around, well to tick it off my bucket list.
Looks like its still operated by a Fokker50, I wouldn't see a problem with one backpack and one camera bag.
Could you check in and then recheck in your bag, most likely the place was pretty small, it was a small airport, if you could call it an airport.
I am flying to Esperance(EPR) this weekend and its actually further 361 miles to 322 miles, I am getting out and having a look around for 24 hours.

Re: Travel to OLP

Certainly not much to do there but drink in the tavern, unless you went over to Andamooka to check out some opals!

I have been up there a few times recently, and the check in staff were pretty rigorously enforcing the 16 kg checked weight, but much less so on the carryon.

If you really do have fairly small second carry on that does get caught by the FA in ADL, I would walk off the plane at OLP and straight into the check in area before picking up the excess bag from the little trolley. Both areas are on the right hand side just after you exit through the security fence. Then take both bags through the security X-Ray and back out to the flight. The FA may again request that you leave one bag on the ground to go with the checked bags, but by then you are about to board the aircraft, and everything will travel with you to ADL.

Watch out for the check in cut off at OLP. As it is an Alliance flight, you don't seem to be able to do an on-line check in through the QF site, and must physically present at the little check in counter at the . The locals are pretty relaxed about it, so it must be quite late, but don't get caught or you really will have to spend some time up there in the heat.

Travel to OLP

There's heaps more to do up there than drink at the tavern. There's the club for a start, plus OD footy club. :D

I seem to recall doing olci on my iPhone in the tavern one night a few years ago.

Oh it really is very obvious which is the terminal building. Head for the lounge is my advice.
