Hi friends,
Have a F award to Lax booked for Sept 26 for myself and the mrs. She now wants to continue to JFK. As you can't book that sector by itself, can I ring QF and just as them to add the sector? Obviously don't want to pay F points for a J trip though...

Anyone had any success with something similar or the same above.

Thanks in advance.

You say you have an award booked to JFK and want to continue to JFK... you probably mean somewhere else?

It may be cheaper to add the flight to your existing booking... but we need to know the final destination as there would be a 5000 point change fee involved. In terms of the points, you will either pay the through-fare for an F award or the sector fare, whichever is cheaper.

Whoops. Have the award to LAX and she now wants to continue to JFK. Edited the original post.

So your SYD-LAX = 7488 miles = 162800 points

SYD-LAX-JFK = 9963 miles and would be 216900 points if charged all at F mileage

LAX-JFK only = 2475 miles = 57000 points in J only

Your current F plus the transcon J would then be 162800+57000 = 219800 - so it would be slightly cheaper to take advantage of the through-fare F award at 216900

However - there will be a 5000 point change fee, bringing it to 221900. Although that change fee is offset in two ways: (a) 'protection' by having both flights on the one ticket and (b) you can use Qantas transcon (domestic sector sold in conjunction with an international connecting flight) rather than AA.

If you are content to build in a longer transit period in LAX, and can find a good AA flight with flat beds on the transcon, you could save a couple thousand miles per person (162800+57000 but no change fee).

If it was booked at the old rates, there's a possibility the new fee will use the old points table.
That has certainly been the case with oneworld awards.

The biggest issue would be award availability on the nonstop LAX-JFK leg.
Good luck in finding it on AA in either J or F.
Which leaves QF, again - if you can get availability.
I'm pretty sure you cannot buy a standalone LAX-JFK on QF in any form without being part of an international itinerary.
So you will have to pay the F points amount the whole way to JFK, which is cheaper than a revenue fare.

Or if you want a stop in LA, book a separate AA J fare with a connection in some city - that would save some points.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I had forgotten about the old rates.

Either way, the call centre would be able to advise the cost of the new booking (QF transcon) + change fee vs anything that could be found stand-alone on AA.
