Adaptor for headphones

But have you listened to the difference in quality between Bose and those el cheapo ear plugs :) Each to their own though.

I'm with you on this one! Forget the 'el cheapo" quality... Completely.
Had done plenty of research before settling on the Bose QC15. Absolutely superb. Marginal weight & space consumption & drowns out the most unwanted sound whilst inflight.

Ok I found a picture of them:

Note how the right hand plug can be swung into the housing, and the left hand plug has that extra ring?
The left hand pin with the 2 black rings is the stereo pin. The single ring pin is for mono sockets. Not sure why you would get both options these days on 1 adaptor unless the dual pin sockets are configured that way.

Agree the single stereo pin is a but weird, unless you need a right hand bend

(then again I bought on ebay a left hand and right hand bend usb cable to make connections to my ps3 neater, and have a bendy hdmi-dvi for my monitor connection, so there are some occasions where you need angled plugs)

My initial enquiry related to the Jetstar entertainment units wher you plug directly into the unit NOT the seat console.
Their headset plug was like the one in the second picture, where one on the pins can swing out of the way.........so not sure if the adaptor I bought will work.

Anyone been on a Jetsar International flight with i pads?

No but interesting article here on how they have a special case to stop access to home button.
Inside Jetstar's iPad app and long-life battery case hardware - Flights | hotels | frequent flyer | business class - Australian Business Traveller

Also case has booster battery to last 20 Hrs so can do SYD- HNL return without recharge.
I am flying the SYD-HNL leg in June in business so should be good.

I'm not 100% sure of the model. The brand I use and like is Sennheiser. I'm looking at the website now and none of them look quite like my model (and I've long since discarded the packaging). But they look similar somewhat to the Sennheiser CX980 or the Sennheiser 400-II Precision (they look like a mix between the two!) So I'm not sure if my model is just an old one that's now been replaced. But anyway, most Sennheiser canal plugs have great sound. Make sure you buy a pair that have adjustable rubber canal inserts. Basically you want the canal plug to block your ear so you pick the size that fits yours the best. :D

I wonder if its a legacy of the old air-tube type of headphones you used to get on planes?

I think it's a theft issue to stop PAX stealing the oh-so-high-quality aircaft headphones.
Stethescope headphones, lol. Yes, I've "read" about them somewhere *cough cough*

I can also recall reports that on some planes that audio sockets worked without adapters. You can plug a stereo 3.5mm plug into the socket and get stereo out. I think it was on the A380s. I'll try to see if i find where i read it.

It would make sense to have one side of the old dual-mono to have a standard stereo jack. That means the carriers could still keep thier coughpy headsets, and PAX with their own could use them without adapters.

If you put a stereo plug into a mono jack (or in this case, one side of a dual mono) you can sometimes get dual mono, but not stereo, if the plug wasn't fully inserted.

The 380 may have one side that is stereo. I'll find out in July, as my first flight in the 380 is LAX-SYD.

One thing to keep in mind with el-cheapo adaptors is the sockets can be a bit "grabby". I like the Sony model. If I could find one I would buy it. I have the cheap chinese model too (which is indentical to the DSE model)

Thanks wingspan for the quick response and the pointers to models to look at ... rjllane

I was using the Sony noise-cancelling ear buds for a few years and was generally happy with them as they cancelled out the in-flight air 'roar' and engine noise, but the over-ear type headphones (e.g. Bose QC15's) do the same but are also much more effective at blocking out peripheral cabin noise than the earbuds.

The dual pin adapters are a necessary evil and a complete pain in the a**e. Apart from being easily lost through dropping in between seat cushions, they intrude quite a bit into valuable knee space, particularly in fixed armrests in baulkhead or exit row seats where the plugs are on the side of the armrests rather than on the end.
