EXCEPT IATA codes usually move when airports are replaced - ie BKK moved and the old airport was given the code DMK - the same has just happened with IST, the old airport is now ISL.

How is it that Berlin has both the Berlin Brandenburg International (BER) and the Berlin Schönefeld Airport (SXF), even though BER is just an expanded/replacement terminal for SXF with the same runway complex? I am surprised that IATA allowed this, as it's really confusing that the same airport has different names for its old and new terminals.

IS BER Open? I heard SXF was going to be retired as a code when BER was opened.

BER is the current city code for Berlin and covers both SXF and TXL (and THF before it closed).
The new runway and terminal for BBI use the same airfield as SXF. The plan is to open the new parts of the SXF/BBI complex and close SXF and TXL, leaving just BER as the city code and IATA code for the then only Berlin airport. It is keeping the ICAO code of EDDB.

Berlin Brandenburg International has yet to open. It might not open until 2026, though current plans are looking at a 2020 or 2021 opening. It was meant to open in 2011.

To be fair, though NRT was called New Tokyo Internatonal Airport when it opened and it is the primary airport for the city, it is about an hour away in Narita, with Narita City being about 10 minutes away.

There's also been people who book flights to eg Sydney, NSW and end up in Sydney, ON or Melbourne, VIC ending up in Melbourne, FL and Paris, France and end up in Paris, TX.
My daughter was flying back from Montreal one time (solo at age 16) and she told the checkin person that her final destination was "Sydney". The agent checked her booking and said she was only booked to Los Angeles and not to Sydney.
Worried my daughter rang me: "Something is wrong with my ticket. Air canada says im not going to sydney only to los angeles".
i said: "Tell her yes you are going to Los Angeles with an onward flight to Sydney Australia S,Y,D, not Sydney Nova Scotia Y,Q,Y. The Los Angeles to Sydney Australia flight is on Qantas.

"Ok....."

Each of the Jetstar franchises has its own IATA code.
JQ - Jetstar (Australia/NZ)
3K - Jetstar Asia (Singapore)
BL - Jetstar Pacific (Vietnam)
GK - Jetstar Japan
They also had JM set aside for Jetstar Hong Kong, but well, that died before it could get flight permissions.
Jetstar Asia used to operated flights into Indonesia under the VF (Valuair) code due to paperwork issues in Indonesia. When those problems were resolved, the VF brand disappeared.
