For sure, burning points means opportunity cost in earned ALL and QF points.

So usually 1,000 status points would be minimum €400 spend and even more if staying at the lower tier properties, wouldn’t it?

I think even if its not a clear cash flow positive program it used to be, it still makes Platinum
and Diamond much easier than real spending - especially if you use Mantra, Peppers and Ibis for some of your stays.

Surely staying in less rewarding properties only makes sense if you are using the status nights from Signature to chase Platinum.
Since of course Diamond can only be earned with status points. Nights are irrelevant.
Why settle for 10 or even 12.5 status points per 10 euros when you could earn 25?
I haven't stayed in a single lower earning property since I started worrying about status.
I see it as wasted money and a lost opportunity.

So across any given year (assuming all self-funded and no tax considerations) the optimal play is to pay cash at 'full rate' properties and burn ALL points at 'less rewarding' properties, when those properties are the most suitable option in a particular destination.

However the post I was replying to did not seem to be referring to non-earning stays.

Obviously bookings with an earn rate of zero can't "make Platinum and Diamond much easier".

I haven't stayed in a single lower earning property since I started worrying about status.

We generally don’t stay at lower earning properties as most as budget type accommodations. We love a few Peppers properties so we are happy to forego the extra status points or use reward points when staying in those
