I'm after some advice on where to stay for a weekend (Fri & Sat night, middle of December) in Oslo. There will be 4 people in total so we're looking at either a 2 bedroom apartment or 2 double/queen rooms.

Obviously the better 'value' option will be the one that is a decent price and so long as it has a nice heated room to come back to is all we really need as we'll all be out for most of the day.

Hotel/apartment prices seem to be in stark contrast to the fares we bought to get over, which were 8 quid each way including taxes. :p

Haven't been there but I don't think there will be any bargains to be had. Maybe try hrs.com as a bit of a different search option for rooms, it worked well for us in a couple of European spots. Booking.com does have a lot of reviews toget a feel of things

I cannot offer recent experience but 15 years ago it was very expensive to stay in a hotel there. In fact everything was expensive. About the only thing comparable in price to Australia was smoked salmon, and wherever you went, there was smoked salmon!

I don't know if things have changed, but takeaway alcohol (other than mid-strength beer, which could be bought at supermarkets) was only available at Government run stores, and they were only open like 0900-1600 on weekdays (or something like that). That was it!

Hotel in question was nice enough (small rooms) and was next to the old Fornebu airport so may not even exist anymore.

A look at the Scandinavia forum on FT may be in order!

Finally, a thread I can help with (sort of).

I've stayed in Oslo 7 times in the last 2.5 years, the two hotels I've stayed at are:

Hotel Royal Christiania

Clarion Hotel Royal Christiania - hotel in oslo - hotels - conference - restaurant - bar

Awesome breakfast buffet, rooms not too bad, incredibly hot girl at check-in (Say hi to her for me :))

Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel

Radisson Blu (SAS) Plaza Hotel, Oslo: City Hotel in Oslo, Norway - Radisson Blu Hotels & Resorts

OK breakfast, incredibly busy. Great rooms, even better if you can flash your WP card and get an upgrade to a business class room.

Nothing in Olso (or Norway in general) is cheap, except for skiing, and the Lindt chocolate in duty free on the way out.

I think you will have sold Flash on the clarion-and not because of the breakfast buffet!:p:lol:;)

Yes and prepare for a visit to the Chiropractor after your visit.

You will have a sore neck.................I think all the ugly girls/women have moved or were deported.

Must visit in the warmer months one time, must be amazing scenery ;)

But I will confirm what has already been said, very very expensive. Certainly not the place to go for a weekend on the grog. But Beauty never comes cheap.

Took a couple of junior engineers with me on one of my trips, they didn't believe me about the girls until we got there and spent the week with their jaws on the ground.

I did one Summer trip, unseasonable 25 degree temperatures, girls in bikinis all over the place soaking up the sun. Those were the days :)

Just a bit further on websites to look at. Doing some browsing for my 2011 trip I realise now that priceline.com will bring up listings & general prices for most Euro locations (including Oslo) also-hadn't used it for that before.

I ended up finding a good 4* mystery hotel on lastminute.com for £78/night. Unfortunately the price went up as the other couple coming with us wanted to book the same time, and didn't have time to book yesterday. Might keep looking....
