We'll be travelling to China in mid March and are unsure of the best way to take 'money' with us - should we take an Aust. based debit card, use the Aust. Post 'Load & Go China' card and pre-load with YMB or is there another/better option? Also what's access like to ATMs? We're on a tour and staying at International hotels.
thanks in anticipation.

Perfectly simple operable ATMs on every corner - YES Debit Card best way to go - International Hotels will all exchange cash for you at daily rate set by Bank of China - they will not skin you. If you are taking cash make sure you take only pristine notes. But again IMHO ATMs are the way to go - I use Prestige EVERY place that accepts CCs - cash from ATMs at others.

I agree. Lived there for 4 years (back in 2008) and ATM (with English language option) available in numerous locations - except maybe in the most remote parts of the country. Rate good if using a debit card although the usual Australian fees on credit cards. Notes dispensed almost always new. I would use the normal precautions with either a debit or credit card as you would use anywhere. Especially protecting PIN and keeping the card in sight at all times.

As other have said - use a fee free debit card (citi debit or similar). Cash machines are everywhere.

You can also exchange A$ at all retail banks many of which are open 7 days - again exchange rate is set by BoC - you will require your passport and pristine A$ notes. Because of ready availability of alt exchange means some hotels will restrict guests to amount you can exchange so if you intend to do so in hotel I would advise you establish their policy early.

Whichever way you choose to proceed PeteSue go forth and enjoy the fascinating country that is China and enjoy the company of their lovely people. What is your itinerary?
