ACCC issues annual report on airport performance

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has submitted its annual airport monitoring report for the 2008–09 financial year to the Minister for Competition Policy and Consumer Affairs.

of note to sydney users

"This year's report has found the performance of Sydney Airport to be of greatest concern. The indications are that Sydney Airport has increased profits by permitting service quality to fall below that which the airlines reasonably expect," ACCC chairman Graeme Samuel, said.

"Airport users, including passengers and airlines, rated Sydney Airport last amongst the monitored airports for the fourth consecutive year and it appears that investment in the international terminal has been slow. And while Sydney Airport was the only airport to report a fall in passenger numbers, its revenue and profit margins still increased. Sydney Airport also recorded the highest average prices at $13.63 per passenger, compared to the lowest of $7.96 at Melbourne Airport."

I wonder whether there will be any changes as a result of this report! Let's hope so.

Productivity Commission to probe monopoly pricing at Sydney Airports | The Australian
THE Australian government will bring forward a planned review of the country's airport operations, including pricing, after the competition watchdog found Sydney Airport may be using monopoly pricing power to generate unfair returns. Transport Minister Anthony Albanese made the announcement today and said that the Productivity Commission - which had planned to begin the review in 2012 - has now indicated it could bring it forward to this year.

Car parking in short term is the biggest gouge and makes my blood boil.

Noting the price of short-term parking has almost doubled in the past financial year, from $28 to $50 for four hours, the report said: ''Car parking revenue was considerably above operating expenses over the whole reporting period.''

However I didn't think it had gone up that fast. I recall it was $20 per day in 1996 when I was a regular. A year ago it would have been in the $40+ range per day but maybe they mean the scale has been brought forward - four hours is a day now when before it was 8 hours? Dunno.

Yes I use Park & Fly instead. Wonder if Mac owns that or will buy it soon.
