American AAdvantage Improves Etihad Award Routing Rules - One Mile at a Time

SWP to EU and Africa now permits Etihad as a through connection without splitting up as two awards! This is great news and as others have commented significantly increases my valuation of AA miles now.

I also note (for the truly desperate) that Mexico and Caribbean are now accessible as a single award via South America 2 (SCL). Strangely, this routing is not available to USA or Canada.

So I am assuming Ethiad is now single award to Europe?

Yes...just booked EY Syd-Auh-Lhr in apartments for 115k and $US 75...
I stopped using EY when priced as 2 awards but single award is good value (even if I have to position from Per to SYD first and then fly west..... As a f/f I don't mind the extra distance, but can't start in Syd if travelling with Mrs citrusb..)

Did you look at starting from SIN in lieu of SYD?

Can’t you include the Per-Syd leg on Qantas as part of the award?

A further question could you do Brisbane Syd Auh LHR or do you have to start in Sydney?

You can do connections on both ends for no further cost as long as you stay in same region.

Edit: You’ll pay slighly more in taxes but no extra miles.

Thanks for the advice given.....

Rang this morning to AA got QF Per - Syd added no extra points small taxes increase - (Peru call centre, delightful agent, then long friendly conversation with supervisor to leave feedback....WOW...as far as i'm concerned it's the way you want to be treated !!!)

Very lucky.

In the past, before AA butchered the award chart and increased the costs, I flew PER-xSYD-AUH and PER-xMEL-xSYD-AUH. On both occasions was charged the cost of two awards. After the report from citrusb, I phoned AA and was told it would always be two awards because EY flies PER-AUH and, therefore, going via SYD is not the most direct routing. I was hoping I'd get 35k miles back (2 x 17.5k for the domestic J sectors) but no chance.

Next time I suggest HUACA. I did quite a few EY flights from Australia using AA (before devaluation) starting in BNE and connecting via MEL or SYD to AUH. Back then EY flew B789 to BNE with first class and my excuse for connecting was that I want to fly appartments, not first class. Most agents were confused by that but after explaining the difference between B789 and A380 they eventually granted same award connection.

I had no problem with the agent booking Bne to Syd to Auh to Mun, but ticketing is taking ages. Hope all is ok as I had the booking on hold for 4 fays before pulling the trigger.

Never booked anything using AA, don't even have any miles at this stage so keen to learn.
When booking, I take it from this thread that you have to ring and can't do it online.
Could these new rules now present better opportunities than LM I wonder?
