AA or Etihad Guest/VA?

I'm a total newbie to award programs. It's been suggested that I sign up for the American Airlines Advantage program before my return trip with Etihad from SYD to Istanbul (IST). I'm flying out on Wed.
I'm hoping to use the points for a trip within Aus or NZ later in the year, or next year.

I'd like to hear experiences from others using AA and whether I am better to sign up for Etihad Guest or VA Velocity.

I'm flying economy, but I can't find any details on which fare class I'm booked into.
I ordered my ticket through STA travel.

I just found out that I am booked into U, which seems to be a discounted economy class.
