US Airways | Loyalty just got better

Earning and redeeming miles

As of January 7, 2014, you can earn Dividend Miles on American flights. Plus, earn Preferred-qualifying miles and segments on eligible American flights, which will count toward elite status in the Dividend Miles program.

How to earn

  • Be sure to include your Dividend Miles number in your reservation when you book.
  • Just like when you travel on US Airways, all purchased, published fare tickets on American earn 100% base miles.
  • You can add your Dividend Miles number to any existing reservations with American for travel on or after January 7, 2014 at aa.com or at the airport.
  • Until we integrate our loyalty programs, elite qualifying miles and segments cannot be combined between the Dividend Miles and AAdvantage programs to qualify for elite status.

How to redeem

  • Check the American Airlines award chart to see how many miles you need to reach your desired destination.
  • Book award travel on American with your Dividend Miles on usairways.com or call 800-428-4322.
  • Miles cannot be combined between the Dividend Miles and AAdvantage programs to redeem flight awards.

that's good news and a few dummy bookings today show some pretty wide open availability from Asia to USA. Prefer first class on AA than UA!!

I think this is a key hint as to what you can use your DMs for from March 31. I don't think we'll be lucky enough to use DMs to book OW travel on DM award chart prices, rules etc.
[/LIST]

the USDM award chart has stayed the same, but allowing you to book AA flights.

If they extend that to other OW carriers it will go beneficial for some routes (but not others)

But the link above says you need to use the AA chart to book AA flights using DMs.

yeah that's what i thought too... but the link takes you to the USDM chart. This holds true even if you click on the link directly from the US Airways site. The USDM chart has been updated to include the words 'American Airlines and US Airways' flights.

The dummy bookings I did reflect the current USDM chart, not the AA award chart.

Personally I think some people are thinking this merger will happen faster than it really will. Given it has been announced that USDM will remain as its own program for some time (and indications are this could be a year or more) it appears likely that USDM will need to publish their own chart revision if this were to occur and more importantly they would need to amend their existing extremely clunky system to support this change.

While I think alignment will occur I think they will do so in the migration to the strategic solution (i.e. the AA system) rather than in a throwaway change to a notoriously difficult system to change (i.e. the existing USDM system). As such I'm not convinced thsi will happen by 31st March, if this was the intent they would probably have already introduced a new USDM chart as advance notice, most airline devaluations seem to give approximately 3 months notice (and those who didnt no doubt wish they had).

Be nice if you could do a US Air redemption with partner airlines but say include an AA flight HKG to DFW etc as one of the 8 or 9 flights, but don't think thye will allow any of these mixings, got to be a stand alone redemption i guess...

the revised award chart makes it clear travel is only on AA or combined AA/US

It's interesting the points cost in DM are a little varied on the same route for AA.

e.g. AA F Saver return NorthAmerica to/from "North Asia" (e.g. ORD-NRT) is 125K with AAdvantage while DM is 120K, 100K/90K Business and 50K/60K economy.

Sorry - to make that clear - these are return costs.

AA quote one way, so you see 62½K for one-way ORD-NRT.

If they allowed OW redemptions using USDM on USDM's current chart and rules (even for a short period) people here would have an absolute field day. It would be like that weekend when the SQ reservation system changed over and everyone booked A380 on SQ.

But what are US taxes like.Last month NRT-LGA then FLL-NRT in F was 125000 but only $US5.03 taxes.
